Volgarr the Viking II is coming!

In exciting news for viking fans the world over, Digital Eclipse have proudly announced the return of Volgarr, everyone’s favourite 2D viking, in his upcoming title Volgarr the Viking II, slated to release later this summer. Read on for more details!

Tough as Viking Horns

Very much like the original Volgarr the Viking that debuted little over a decade ago, the sequel to this action-packed 2D platformer is equally as difficult. Just take a look at the announcement trailer we’ve linked below to see just how many times these evil devs at Crazy Viking Studios expect you to die, die, and die again.

However, all but the most cowardly of vikings embrace Valhalla, and death is of course not the end. It’s just a learning experience! Over time, you’ll start to understand enemy attack patterns, and when you dodge, roll and counter-attack with your own suite of moves.

Kristofor Durrschmidt, CEO & Creative Director at developer Crazy Viking Studios, emphasises the importance that difficulty is in the Volgarr series:

Volgarr is known for being easy to learn, hard to master. For some, that might even be an understatement. But that design philosophy guided every aspect of development for Volgarr II… We learned a lot from launching the original, and even with some modern updates, fans are going to love the sequel. Volgarr is still a game where, if you want the ultimate experience, you’ll need to really master what it asks of you.

Those modern updates in question? Well, Volgarr II will include the ability to continue upon death, respawn at checkpoints, and will include a practice mode. However, only when you take off these stabilisers will you see the true offering of the game.

Old-School Feel

Another important element of the Volgarr II DNA is found within the retro, arcadey visuals, music and general feel of the game. Mike Mika – Head of Digital Eclipse – had this to say on that very topic:

One of our key pillars is making new games the old-fashioned way. We love and celebrate games where every pixel is hand-crafted… Volgarr was one of those games we couldn’t put down, no matter how hard it was. Games like this are a rare breed, and we’re happy to play a role in seeing Volgarr II realized.

Key Features

  • Stave off death with new power-ups and magic items
  • A roster of ruthless bosses so big and so ugly, they’re just begging to have their heads chopped off

  • Six distinct endings based on player performance —only the masterfully skilled will unlock a hidden level to battle a secret final boss!

  • Buckets of blood and bone explosions
  • Loincloths

Not Long to Wait!

Volgarr II is coming to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Switch and PC on August 6th, 2024. Fans will have to wait just a few short months to get their hands on this adrenaline-pumping, brutal action-platformer!

As always, we will keep you updated with any developments on Volgar II, as well as have a full review for you around launch.

I'm an avid gamer who will play pretty much anything... but stick an open world or adventure game in front of me and I'm more than happy.
