Over recent years Wales Interactive have provided us a good few different gaming options, mostly centred around the FMV scene with the likes of The Bunker, The Complex and Late Shift. Occasionally though we see them going really dark, and that is what is happening here today as they release the gruesome horror of Maid of Sker on to Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Available to purchase and download right now on Xbox One, PS4 and PC, with a Nintendo Switch edition due to drop later in the year, Maid of Sker focuses on a tale full of Welsh folklore. It whisks plaers right back to 1898 as thy get to visit the notorious Hotel Sker, trying despearatley to understand the secrets, and the horrors, that are found within.

Maid of Sker will set you back £19.99, but for that cash payout you’ll be witness to one of the darkest, most gruesome, utterly horrific video game experiences of the year. But when you find out that the writing team behind it were also behind the stunning SOMA and Don’t Knock Twice, you’ll fast understand how this has come about.

So Maid of Sker promises to deliver a horrifying gaming experience, but it is in the audio where this really looks to shine. With the spine-chilling voice of Tia Kalmaru in palce, and re-imagining of some of the most famous of Welsh hymns pushing the experience along, this is a title that you’ll want to hear just as much as you want to see.

Features of Maid of Sker on Xbox One, PS4 and PC include:

  • 3D sound-based AI system as the core survival mechanic
  • Fusing psychological, gothic and British horror
  • Realistic visuals, immersive environments and eerie atmospherics
  • Famous Welsh hymns from the spine-chilling voice of Tia Kalmaru
  • Re-imagining of the Welsh folk song “Y Ferch o’r Sger” (The Maid of Sker)

Our full review of Maid of Sker on Xbox One is fast approaching and will be able to tell you more about how Wales Interactive’s latest release will play out. In the meantime, the usual digital stores will sort you out. The Xbox Store is our favourite and you should head there to download the game on Xbox One.

Edit: Our review of Maid of Sker on Xbox One is live.

Game Description:

Brave the nightmares of the Quiet Ones. Do not panic…don’t even breathe! Maid of Sker is a first-person survival horror, set in a remote hotel with a gory and macabre history from British folklore. Armed with only a defensive sound device, you’ll utilise stealth tactics to avoid death amongst a cult of sound-based AI enemies. Set in 1898 and inspired by the haunting Welsh tale of Elisabeth Williams, this is a story of a family empire driven by torture, slavery, piracy and a supernatural mystery that suffocates the grounds of the hotel. Developed by Wales Interactive with a plot crafted by the writing talent and designers behind the likes of SOMA, The Bunker and Battlefield 1.

I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
