Wander Stars – a new Anime RPG

A brand-new, anime-inspired RPG adventure where your words are literally your weapons has just blazed a path across the galaxy to consoles and PC – Wander Stars.

Wander Stars is from developer Paper Castle Games and indie narrative label Fellow Traveller. This unique new quest is now available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC for ÂŁ20.99.

Prepare to join an unlikely partnership, collect the pieces of a fabled map, and use a magical form of martial art to create your own customised attacks by combining words in intense, turn-based battles.

An Anime You Can Play

Inspired by the Saturday morning cartoons and anime greats of the 90s, like Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon, Wander Stars is a rollercoaster adventure that plays out across 10 television-style “episodes.”

The story follows Ringo, a young martial artist looking for her brother, and Wolfe, a mysterious scoundrel running from his past. The two join forces in an unlikely partnership to collect the pieces of the fabled Wanderstar Map. Along the way, they will build a found family of colourful characters and learn that, even with the trail gone cold, these wandering stars are bound to find each other.

Check out the anime-inspired adventure in the official launch trailer…

A Symphony of Words and Fists

The core of Wander Stars’ unique combat system is the magical martial art of Kiai. This allows Ringo to create custom attacks by combining words. You can piece them together to perform impossibly powerful offensive moves like “Fire! Smash!” or pull off devastating defensive moves like the “Phantom! Guard!” With over 200 words to collect, there is a near-infinite number of possible unique attacks to create.

The Kiai martial art is all about fighting with honour. If you defeat an opponent in an honourable way, you can turn the most heated of rivals into the fastest of friends. Befriending your rivals will earn you their words of encouragement in the form of useful “Pep Ups,” which can be equipped to give you special bonuses in combat.

Each of the 10 episodes features a map to explore with procedurally generated battles, special events, and other secrets to find. You can even replay episodes to find all the side adventures and party member banter you might have missed, with the ever-changing maps ensuring that the experience is never quite the same.

The Adventure, Broken Down

What can you expect from this new anime-inspired RPG? Well, quite a lot as it turns out…

  • An Anime You Can Play: A story-driven adventure inspired by 90s classics that plays out over 10 television-style episodes.
  • Unique Word-Based Combat: Create custom attacks by combining over 200 words.
  • Turn Rivals into Allies: Defeat opponents with honour to earn their friendship and powerful “Pep Up” bonuses.
  • Endless Replayability: Explore ever-changing maps with procedurally generated battles and special events.
  • A Found Family: Join a cast of colourful characters on a rollercoaster adventure across the universe.

The stars are calling, and a new adventure is waiting to be written. If you’re a fan of unique, story-driven RPGs and classic 90s anime, Wander Stars is ready for you on the Xbox Store and other digital platforms right now.
