When Warhammer Chaosbane trundled onto the Xbox One in June of last year, we all murmured appreciation about it actually being a good Warhammer game. We gave it a solid 4/5 in our review, and said it “is a genuinely fun and exciting dungeon crawler RPG”. It didn’t break any records in terms of sales, but it had a prolonged life thanks to multiple DLC packs. It seems like a good time for a reappraisal, as Warhammer: Chaosbane has been spruced up for the launch of the Xbox Series X|S, and all its mod-cons are included, in the form of 12 packs of DLC, all additional content and a full 4K 60FPS experience.

For those who didn’t get to play it on its first rotation, Warhammer: Chaosbane was a Diablo-alike that managed to find its own voice. In a year that has seen a slightly meek Torchlight III pass us by, and no sign – yet – of Diablo IV, this will be the go-to action RPG of choice on the next generation for a little while yet.
We’re most taken with the optimisation for co-op, as Warhammer has always been about nerding it up with mates. With up to four players online or local, you get to see your hero’s skills synergising with others in glorious 4K technicolour. There’s more than enough heroes to choose from, as there are six character classes, all with wildly different approaches. This includes the Witch Hunter class, which wasn’t available on Chaosbane’s first launch.
