Steamboat Incident – on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch

There are plenty of places you don’t want to find yourself in a horror game. An abandoned asylum. A creepy forest. A haunted mansion. A rusting steamboat stranded in the middle of the ocean with a monster hunting you? That’s probably somewhere near the top of the list too.

That’s the setup behind Steamboat Incident, a new survival horror release from Ratalaika Games and Mascot Bro Studio, available now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch for £9.99.

A Floating Nightmare

Steamboat Incident casts players as an unfortunate victim who wakes up aboard an isolated steamboat after being kidnapped by a terrifying creature known only as Will. Legend has it that the monster was locked away for more than ninety years before finally snapping, and now it’s roaming the vessel in search of its next victim. Unfortunately for you, there aren’t many places to hide.

What follows is a first-person horror experience focused on exploration, stealth and survival. You’ll creep through narrow corridors, investigate abandoned rooms and search for clues that might explain exactly what happened aboard this cursed ship.

Hide First, Ask Questions Later

This isn’t the sort of horror game where you’re armed to the teeth and ready to fight back.

Instead, Steamboat Incident leans into vulnerability. As you search for parts needed to repair the ship and uncover its secrets, you’ll need to stay out of sight whenever Will gets too close. Hiding under tables, ducking into rooms and carefully navigating the boat becomes just as important as solving the puzzles themselves. The confined setting should help maintain a constant sense of pressure too. After all, when you’re surrounded by nothing but water; there isn’t exactly an emergency exit.

For horror fans looking for a new indie fright, Steamboat Incident offers a mix of stealth, exploration and puzzle-solving wrapped up in a suitably gloomy setting. Just don’t expect a pleasant voyage.

Steamboat Incident is available now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S (via the Xbox Store), PlayStation and Nintendo Switch for £9.99.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
