Why Do We Forget Our Passwords And How Can We Keep Them Safe?

-

You might think that your memory is your best friend, but our memory is often deceiving. Hands down, there is nothing more frustrating than forgetting your password.

Our brains are so weird that they sometimes suddenly forget things we usually use and remember daily. Things like ATM passwords, phone passwords, or patterns randomly drop out of our heads.

It’s not anecdotal, either.

According to a recent password report, those from the U.S., UK, and France reported resetting most of their passwords once a month. That might not seem much, but resetting a password takes 4 minutes every time.

Over a year, these minutes add up to hours and hours! Some even have reported resetting their passwords every day! Whoops! That’s a lot of time spent if you ask us!

So why do we forget our passwords? Is it because of short attention spans, dwindling memory, or a general lack of care? Well, the answer is much more nuanced than that.

The Reason Why We Keep On Forgetting Our Passwords So Easily

Research does not point to one particular factor that makes you forget your passwords so easily. After all, it can also be due to personal issues.

If you forget things in general, like where you kept your car keys, the birthdays of people close to you, and other things, then that may point to something more serious. Get yourself checked for Amnesia or Alziehmers just to rule out severe medical conditions.

If you’re struggling with passwords, then know you’re not alone. In the same report, 14% of people surveyed in the U.S. reported resetting their passwords daily. That’s a whopping 26 hours wasted just to reset your password each year.

More Accounts Mean More Passwords

One of the reasons why we keep on forgetting passwords is that there is a lot to remember. We have 15 different social media platforms, 10 different banking accounts, two work emails, and so much more beyond that. Each version requires a different password for security reasons; it’s only human that we end up forgetting our passwords so quickly.

Settings Weird And Complicated Passwords

A strong password is one with alphanumerics, capital, and small case letters, complete with a symbol. That means there are too many variables to keep track of. Misremembering even one of them from one another, means you’re going to spend the next ten minutes of your life resetting the password.

Over-Dependence On Biometric Logins

Every app and account with a password also has a biometric login alternative. That means you can use your Face ID on iPhones and your fingerprint sensor on your Android phones to log into your account. The more you use your biometric credentials, the less often you use your actual password details. Thus, you need to remember your patterns, passcodes, and numbers!

Keeping your passwords safe is essential. You can use password managers if you want highly encrypted alternatives. Browsers like Google Chrome and others offer an inbuilt password-saving option. Saving your passwords online makes your password mobile. Thus, you can access them anywhere.

Although you should know to access all your passwords on all your sites, you will have to remember one Master password. Which – in case you forget it – can make you lose access to all your passwords.

Finally, if you like things more old school, you’re better off writing your password in a secret diary somewhere. Since physical notes are inherently risky and prone to being lost, stolen, or misplaced, you shouldn’t use them.
