When you think of high-quality digital pinball on the Xbox, one name almost certainly springs to mind: Pinball FX. It’s the platform that has, for years, set the standard for realistic physics, licensed tables, and endless replayability.
Today, a new challenger enters the arena from developer Super PowerUP Games. The Wild & Horror Pinball bundle has arrived on Xbox and PC, offering a six-game collection for just £9.99.
On paper, it sounds like a flippin’ good deal. But in a genre where physics and feel are everything, can this budget bundle hold its own against the reigning champion, or is it a drain ball waiting to happen?
Examining the New Challenger: What’s in the Bundle?
The Wild & Horror Pinball bundle promises a lot. It boasts “perfect reproductions of real pinball machines,” complete with detailed graphics, sounds, multiple camera angles, and online leaderboards to chase that high score.
For under a tenner, you get access to six distinct, thematically appropriate tables:
- Jurassic Pinball
- Halloween Pinball
- Safari Pinball
- Mummy Pinball
- Shark Pinball
- Werewolf Pinball
The collection certainly doesn’t lack for variety in its themes, covering everything from prehistoric predators to classic movie monsters.
The Red Flag: Our Previous Experience
This is where we have to pause and issue a significant word of caution. While the promise of six tables for a low price is tempting, our past experience with one of the included games was, to put it lightly, dreadful.
When we reviewed Jurassic Pinball, it earned a rock-bottom score of 1/5.
In our review, we stated, “Jurassic Pinball offers up a depressingly bland pinball table with almost no redeeming features. Aside from the fact that the delays and dodgy physics are such that your turns will be over very quickly.“
That single experience with a table from this exact collection raises serious questions about the underlying physics engine and design quality of the other five games. When the core mechanics of a pinball game are fundamentally flawed, no amount of spooky or wild themes can save it.
The Reigning Champion: Why Pinball FX is Still the Top Score
So, if this new collection comes with such a significant warning, where should pinball fans on Xbox be spending their money and time? The answer remains, unequivocally, Pinball FX.
It is, for our money, the definitive pinball experience on the platform. In our own review of the base game, we called it “a pretty good place to begin your collection.”
It offers a robust platform with vastly superior physics, a huge and ever-expanding library of incredible tables (including major licenses like Star Wars, Marvel, and Indiana Jones), and a proven track record of quality. It’s the standard by which all other digital pinball games are judged.
Ultimately, the choice is always yours. The Wild & Horror Pinball bundle offers a large quantity of tables for a very low price, and that might be enough to tempt some curiosity. However, based on our own dismal experience with its gameplay, it’s a high-risk purchase that we cannot recommend.
For our money, the proven quality, satisfying gameplay, and reliable physics of Pinball FX remain the undisputed high score for any pinball wizard on Xbox.
The Wild & Horror Pinball bundle is available on the Xbox Store now for £9.99. We’d advise you to check out our articles and consider your options carefully before diving in.
