First announced back in 2018, it’s time for us to finally prepare ourselves for braving the nightmares of Maid of Sker, the next survival horror experience coming from Wales Interactive. And even though we’ve gone nearly a couple of years since last hearing of the game, it’s now that the release window is confirmed.

Wales Interactive are well known for their brilliant FMV adventures, with the likes of The Complex, The Bunker and Don’t Knock Twice immersing gamers into weird and wonderful worlds. Next up though is a terrifying first person survival horror – Maid of Sker – with it all set to hit Xbox One, PS4 and PC via Steam in June 2020. After that, it’ll be the turn of Nintendo Switch players at some point in October.

Edit: May 28th 2020 sees the following press update pushed out, dropping the Maid of Sker release to sometime in July…

Maid of Sker will now launch in July 2020 for Steam, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Richard Pring, Game Director said, “The new date will enable Maid of Sker to launch simultaneously across digital and physical platforms, whilst also allowing for the team to fine-tune the macabre horror in Maid of Sker to its absolute-ly terrifying limits!”

Maid of Sker takes us back to 1988, given the opportunity to adventure through the notoriously macabre Hotel Sker. With multiple ways for your stay at Hotel Sker to come to an end, you will need to think fast and use your time wisely as you navigate the halls and grounds, employing no-weapon survival tactics, and relying on your inner ability to keep quiet; to stay breathing.

With Wales Interactive having teamed up with the talent behind Don’t Knock Twice and SOMA, Maid of Sker has been inspired by the folk story of Elisabeth Williams – the tragic tale of a Welsh woman in the 1800’s losing her life after her father locks her away in her room to die of heartbreak. Maid of Sker brings forward a story of a family empire driven by a supernatural mystery that suffocates the grounds of the hotel.

Promising a chilling story, realistic visuals, and more, you’ll also find Tia Kalmaru is lending her voice to the game to recreate Welsh hymns in theme with Maid of Sker’s terrifying tone.

Features include:

  • 3D sound-based AI system as the core survival mechanic.
  • A chilling story inspired by Welsh folklore fusing psychological, gothic and British horror.
  • Realistic visuals featuring 4k uncapped on PC and enhancements on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.
  • Re-imagining of famous Welsh hymns Calon Lân (A Pure Heart), Suo-Gân (Welsh Lullaby) and Ar Hyd Y Nos (All Through the Night) from the spine-chilling voice of Tia Kalmaru.

On the announcement of their new game, Managing Director David Banner stated “We’re so excited to be announcing Maid of Sker. For us at Wales Interactive Maid of Sker is a fantastic chance to share some Welsh heritage with the rest of the gaming world and frighten them all at the same time!”

We’ll be sure to follow up with a totally confirmed release date as and when we can. For now though, check out the trailer below and prepare yourself to get involved with the madness of the Maid.

I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
