It’s been many years since World War Z first started pushing back the zombies masses on Xbox, PlayStation and PC and since that time, it’s a game that has evolved massively. That’s the case once again with the free Extinction update as it rolls out.
Whether you played the base game of World War Z back in 2019, the latter Game of the Year Edition, that of the Aftermath expansion or as any one of a number of updates hit, you should well have had a great time. But things can always be better, and that’s where the new – and free – Extinction update comes in.Â
Available today on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 or PC, is the Extinction update for World War Z: Aftermath. And that means the undead are back, as the ultimate cooperative zombie shooter adds in all-new challenges, another map, skins and more. There is also the addition of the Arizona XL map to Challenge Horde Mode.
A Challenge in Extinction Mode
It’s the new Extinction Challenge Mode that should get many excited, as it raises the bar higher than ever before. it comes with tougher, more aggressive enemies, each of which is harder to take down than anything before it. They are capable of infecting you on contact too, with death occurring after just one incapacitation. Expect respawns to only take place at checkpoints too.Â
Each week the Extinction Challenge Mode will evolve, as maps from one campaign episode will be featured on a bit of rotation. However, if you manage to complete all maps from any episode for the first time in this mode, you will receive bonus rewards like a heavy weapon skin, 350 blue coins and 1,000 gold coins!
New mutators
What’s more, today’s update also adds 13 new mutators for Challenge Horde Mode:
- Grenadier – The Bomber throws explosives until neutralized
- Myopia – After aiming, your vision becomes blurred
- Plague Creatures – During the wave, a random special zombie and poison cloud appears
- Mass Contamination – The Booster infects a larger group of zombies nearby
- Angry Turrets – At the start of the wave, all deployed turrets become neutral, posing a
- deadly threat to both zombies and human players
- New Advantages for All 8 Classes – Raise the health and damage of each class by 50%
