The definitive version of one of the greatest open-world games of all time has just ridden into a new generation of hardware. Red Dead Redemption, the critically acclaimed predecessor to Red Dead Redemption 2, has launched in a massive multi-platform release.
Rockstar Games has delivered the complete single-player experience, including the iconic Undead Nightmare expansion, to modern consoles with a long-awaited suite of enhancements, including a smooth 60 frames per second and resolutions up to 4K on Xbox Series X|S.
A Legacy Unshackled
This launch is a monumental moment for fans who have previously relied on backward compatibility to experience John Marston’s story. The focus is on a native, high-performance experience:
Players on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are now experiencing a fluid 60 frames per second, enhanced image quality, and resolutions up to 4K. The new versions also support HDR. Even the Nintendo Switch 2 version is now enjoying the same fluid 60 FPS gameplay, along with support for DLSS and mouse controls.
Free for Existing Owners
Current owners on PS4, Nintendo Switch, and the digital backward compatible version on Xbox One are able to upgrade digitally for free. Furthermore, previous console owners can utilise their existing save data to pick up where they left off.
The Journey of John Marston
The Red Dead Redemption universe is one we hold in the highest regard. Our 5/5 review of Red Dead Redemption 2 called it a “brilliantly crafted masterpiece” that will “take over your life.” RDR1 follows the events immediately after that game, focusing on a desperate quest for redemption.
The story sees former outlaw John Marston forced to hunt down the gang of criminals he once called friends. His journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico as he fights to bury his blood-stained past is a direct and essential chapter in the saga. We first looked back on this iconic tale back in 2010, noting its impact in a piece titled Looking back to 2010 with Red Dead Redemption.
Undead Nightmare Returns
Also included is the legendary horror companion piece, Undead Nightmare. We looked back on this iconic zombie-horror story in 2010, calling it the king of DLC. This standalone adventure transforms the world into an apocalyptic fight for survival against a zombie horde.
