Sunderfolk – out now

Get ready to rediscover game night with Sunderfolk on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC.

Sunderfolk is the highly anticipated tactical co-op adventure inspired by tabletop gaming. Developed by Secret Door and published by Dreamhaven, this unique title is now available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam for ÂŁ44.99 / $49.99 USD.

Sunderfolk aims to bridge the gap between deep tabletop role-playing and accessible co-op video games by using a novel control scheme: your phone or tablet is your controller, interface, character sheet, and rulebook, all interacting with the main action unfolding on your TV or monitor.

We first heard about this innovative approach back in 2024 when Sunderfolk was announced, and now the full adventure is here. Up to four players embark on a quest through the magical but dangerous Sunderlands to save the peaceful animal village of Arden from a mysterious corruption.

Tabletop Feel, Digital Convenience

The core concept revolves around bringing the social, collaborative feel of a tabletop RPG night to a streamlined digital format.

Forget complex rulebooks and lengthy setup times; players simply scan a QR code on the main screen to download the free Sunderfolk app (iOS/Android), which then becomes their personal interface.

  • Seamless Control: Manage your character, inventory, abilities (Skill Cards), and control the action on the main screen, all via your phone/tablet.
  • Accessible to All: Designed to be easy for casual players or tabletop newcomers to pick up, while still offering strategic depth for veterans.
  • Play Your Way: Enjoy couch co-op with friends and family in the same room, or connect virtually by streaming the main screen.

Tactics, Classes, and Saving Arden

Sunderfolk features engaging turn-based tactical combat where positioning and teamwork are key.

  • Choose Your Hero: Select from six distinct animal heroes representing classic RPG roles: Arcanist, Bard, Berserker, Pyromancer, Ranger, or Rogue.
  • Card-Based Combat: Select from your deck of Skill Cards each turn to execute movements, attacks, and use items. Beware of Fate Cards that can randomly impact effectiveness!
  • Customize & Progress: Tailor heroes with weapons, armor, items, and skills. Level up, customize your skill deck, and unlock more options by upgrading vendors back in the hub village of Arden between missions.

A Vision for Togetherness

The developers at Secret Door and Dreamhaven are passionate about creating shared gaming experiences.

“As lifelong tabletop fans, it’s a dream come true to launch Sunderfolk as a bridge between the world of tabletop role-playing games and co-op video games,” said Chris Sigaty, studio head of Secret Door. “We hope to foster new communities, spark shared stories, and watch players create lasting memories of camaraderie and adventure in the Sunderlands.”

“Sunderfolk is a truly special experience: a game built to bring people together, whether you’re a lifelong gamer or just now discovering the joy of play,” added Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Dreamhaven.

Key Features

  • Rediscover Game Night: A streamlined tabletop RPG experience controlled via phone/tablet (required free app) for 1-4 players (local or virtual).

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
