Up Next – A look at the Xbox One games out in May 2017

-

The year continues to roll on and May 2017 is very nearly with us. And with the new month comes a number of new Xbox One games for us to get our teeth into. But what are they, and more importantly, will they be worth your cash? We take a look at the Xbox One games which will be in stores near you throughout May 2017.

[amazon_textlink asin=’B01GPAIAXC’ text=’Injustice 2′ template=’ProductLink’ store=’the03da-21′ marketplace=’UK’ link_id=’6a0b8d06-2861-11e7-9688-e5d5ebb25321′]

Comic book fans prepare to rejoice as all your favourite DC characters are back on Xbox One with the return of NeverRealm’s fighting series, Injustice, with Injustice 2 coming complete with an absolutely huge roster of DC heroes and villains to try your hand at, including new additions in the form of Supergirl, Gorilla Grodd and Scarecrow, to name just a few.

While the basic fighting mechanics and Injustice staples, such as environmental interaction, stage transitions and clashes, are retained in Injustice 2 – the major new thing that this sequel brings to the table comes in the form of a loot system. Known as the Gear System, clothing items and the like will be sent your way when you finish a match – and these items increase your abilities and stats such as damage, thus encouraging replayability throughout.

Why Should You Buy It? Whether it is the online side of things, the single-player story mode or the new Multiverse mode that excites you, you can be sure that there will be enough content in Injustice 2 to ensure you will be playing for many hours.

After many, many, MANY years of speculation – and one unreleased bounty hunter sequel – Prey is finally back, and nothing has looked more tense since, well, Prey in 2006.

Nevertheless, Prey stations you on a broken spaceship, surrounded by aliens that have an array of powers and creepy, spider-like bodies, and the ability to morph into anything and everything – even the smallest things like a coffee mug. Because of this, not even the enemies with the lowest health should be underestimated and this completely eliminates the chance for a break in the tension.

While you do have many weapons in which to dispose of all manner of bad guy, you are going to have to have your wits about you if you want to stand any chance of surviving on the Talos I.

Why Should You Buy It? Terror and tension will be emphasised throughout the game, and it will be up to you how you cope with the powerful enemies. Will you run for your life or blast them to pieces?

Don’t Starve Mega Pack

There is no doubt that there are many survival titles out there, all designed to use extreme difficulty to test those skills acquired over years of gaming – just to see if you are the ultimate survivalist. But not many, if any in fact, do it like Don’t Starve does, with its unique viewpoint and art-style.

With regards to the latter, Don’t Starve doesn’t strive to look super realistic to match its gameplay, instead favouring dark, gloomy cartoon visuals, all shown from a far away viewpoint to see much of the world around your character.

As with most in the genre, Don’t Starve will be pretty brutal, throwing you in the deep end with little to no hand-holding, leaving you there to gather resources and craft weapons and the like to survive.

The Don’t Starve Mega Pack allows gamers to be treated to a whole host of content to test themselves with, being able to bring a local co-op buddy along for the hellish ride, encouraging teamwork to make the most of the little you will have.

Why Should You Buy It? Don’t Starve with local co-op? Yes please!

Dreamfall Chapters

Dreamfall Chapters sees us following the journey of three characters in alternate dimensions – one being a horrific cyberpunk vision of our future and the other being a magical fantasy realm – with these heroes having to attempt to save the very fabric of the universe from being ripped to shreds.

To go about this you must use all the logic and lateral thinking your brain has to offer to solve particularly challenging puzzles and riddles posed to you. You can be sure that Dreamfall Chapters will play with your feelings at every moment, with emotional scenes throughout, really allowing you empathise with the characters you control as you make some story-changing decisions.

Why Should You Buy It? Dreamfall Chapters seems to be a very interesting concept with stunning areas to explore and gaze at. A powerful story, sprinkled with some puzzles, is sure to have you racking your brain for days on end.

Teslagrad was something of an indie hit when it arrived on Xbox One last year, and its standalone followup, World to the West looks to continue its charm.

With colourful cartoon landscapes and four playable heroes, all with different abilities and strengths to dispatch your foes with, WttW will have you switching between attacking or avoiding enemies and solving puzzles – as well as finding secrets around the world – all as you try to uncover the mystery to the world that Rain Games have created.

Why Should You Buy It? If you are looking for a new action adventure, set in some fantastic landscapes, then World to the West may just be down your street.

[amazon_textlink asin=’B06WP73CQP’ text=’Lock’s Quest’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’the03da-21′ marketplace=’UK’ link_id=’dcc6d877-2d97-11e7-8209-65f51d134bfd’]

Lock’s Quest has experienced it all, but now Lock is preparing to tackle a new audience on the Xbox One…even after a last minute delay.

Following the journey of Lock, Lock’s Quest tells the tale of a young boy who finds his village being invaded, triggering an all-out war between two warring factions of Kingdom Force and Clockwork Army. Across multiple levels, you will have to lay down various weapons such as turrets and spells, improving your defences day by day as you ward off ever smarter enemies.

Why Should You Buy It? If you know of Lock’s Quest, then you know exactly why you should be buying it on Xbox One.

[amazon_textlink asin=’B06XR7CXJJ’ text=’RiME’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’the03da-21′ marketplace=’UK’ link_id=’cff0411e-2d97-11e7-b25f-a1fef04acb6e’]

As a young boy left shipwrecked on a mysterious island of ancient architecture, hiding the secrets behind a long-lost civilisation, RiME puts your wits to the test as you will have to adventure through many puzzles and challenges to uncover the mystery to the island.

Through exploring the colourful world RiME places you in, you will gradually unlock the mystery you set out to solve, with a subtle narrative unfolding as you play.

Why Should You Buy It? Puzzles? Challenges? Mysteries? RiME should keep you scratching your head for days on end.

[amazon_textlink asin=’B00LOSGLPU’ text=’Constructor’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’the03da-21′ marketplace=’UK’ link_id=’beb14695-2d97-11e7-a837-9341ed054307′]

It isn’t everyday that you see a game from the last millennium arrive again, but Constructor is getting an HD re-release on Xbox One.

Basically, you are put in control of a construction company in a town full of other companies who are all vying to put you out of business. By balancing your ability to build houses, move people into those homes and getting them contributing in money terms, it’ll be up to you to make your business the best in the town.

Why Should You Buy It? If you have ever really fancied being a construction company boss, in a world where all the other construction companies are willing to shut you down… well I guess Constructor is really for you.

[amazon_textlink asin=’B01N38G5UF’ text=’Portal Knights’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’the03da-21′ marketplace=’UK’ link_id=’b29bb604-2d97-11e7-956f-51b69d7d0454′]

We all love a good action RPG to sink our teeth into and the newest one to do so is Portal Knights – an action RPG which has a twist.

Coming in the form of randomly generated environments and hundreds of weapons, costumes and spells to defeat your foes, Portal Knights lets you get on with it either solo, with a split screen buddy or in tandem with up to three online players. Furthermore, Portal Knights has a huge emphasis on crafting new weapons to make yourself the most unstoppable knight, ready to tackle the Portal Guardians – some of the toughest bosses in the game.

We’ve been hands-on with the game already – check out our thoughts right now.

Why Should You Buy It? Every now and then a game comes along that doesn’t seem huge, but with the hundreds of items to use, and with some friends as well, Portal Knights could well take up a lot of your time.

The Surge

If you can imagine how the child of Destiny and Dark Souls would turn out, you won’t be too far away from The Surge.

Playing out in a grim interpretation of dystopian Earth, risk and reward is the name of the game. All suited up in an awesome looking exo-suit, complete with crazy abilities to destroy your foes, you are going to have to weigh up if you REALLY need that particular piece of loot or not, because chances are the only way to it is through a super tough enemy.

And this is where a good understanding of The Surge’s unique combat system will come in useful, as you target specific points on your enemy and take them to pieces with some crazy dismemberment. Level up, gain better equipment, craft new weapons and continue.

Why Should You Buy It? If you fancy testing your hand at a brand new hardcore action RPG, and want to get inside a grim version of the future, then it isn’t too long until The Surge drops onto shelves.

[amazon_textlink asin=’B06XXHX25B’ text=’Guardians of the Galaxy – The Telltale Series Season Pass Disc’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’the03da-21′ marketplace=’UK’ link_id=’24b48a3d-2d98-11e7-9a4f-894eb431d9b8′]

We all know who the undisputed kings of emotional storytelling and heart wrenching decisions are – yep, Telltale Games. And it is these guys who are back on the scene with a single disc unlocking every episode of their new series (as soon as they are individually released, of course) based on the Marvel series, Guardians of the Galaxy.

However, due to the fact that the films deliver plenty of laughs following a group of unlikely heroes – including a talking tree and a gun-wielding raccoon – don’t expect to be close to tears while playing. The emotional draw of The Walking Dead this isn’t…it’s a whole new tale.

If you need to know more, then we advise you to check out our review of the first episode right now. Pretty sure it’ll get you in the mood for everything the rest of the season can bring.

Why Should You Buy It? With a whole bunch of experience in the genre to back them up, you can be sure that Telltale Games will deliver you the ultimate Guardians of the Galaxy experience.

So, alongside a whole host of digital only titles which will be dropping in May 2017, this next month looks to be a bit of a cracker. What will you be picking up? Let us know in the comments below!

I'm an avid gamer who will play pretty much anything... but stick an open world or adventure game in front of me and I'm more than happy.
