Professional esports players are now taking home prize money on par with traditional athletes from professional sports leagues around the world. While it may be some time still before an esports star takes up the same wages as a Premier League footballer, NFL player, or NBA superstar, the opportunity is there to make a living. FIFA player Donovan ‘Fnatic Tekkz’ Hunt is one of those esports stars making his mark. At the FIFA 2020 FUT Champions Cup Stage 1, Hunt won the lion’s share of an unbelievable $200,000 prize purse. The FIFA 2020 FUT Champions Cup Stage 1 was the first major event of the FIFA 20 Global Series. The series sees esports athletes compiling points in a bid to qualify for the FIFA 20 eWorld Cup. Esports fans can check out other offers before the next Global Series event and wager on the FIFA 20 player they believe will win the grand final.

Hunt has been a strong performer on the FIFA Global Series circuit since turning professional. Questions were raised before Stage 1 due to Hunt’s poor FIFA 19 eWorld Cup. However, his win at the weekend shows that ‘Fnatic Tekkz’ will be in the hunt for another place in the eWorld Cup this time around. The tournament’s grand final saw Hunt defeat rival Flavio ‘Fifilza’ Brito of Brazil, 3-0.

Hunt will return to Bucharest in November for the Stage 2 of the FUT Champions Cup. He will again be among the favorites to take home a win. Hunt has previously claimed his driving force to win tournaments is silverware and not financial reward. Regardless of his motivations, he will be the sportsbooks’ favorite when Stage 2 kicks off.

Who is Donovan ‘Fnatic Tekkz’ Hunt?

Hunt is considered the most consistent FIFA player in the world today and he is only 18-years old. Despite his relatively young age, Hunt has been on the professional esports circuit since making waves in early 2018. He won the first-ever FUT Champions Cup tournament held in Barcelona. Hunt then won two more FUT Champions Cups lifting silverware in three of the six total tournaments in 2018-19.

Like many of the top esports athletes in the world, Hunt is signed to a professional team. The Englishman wears the black and orange colours of Fnatic, an esports team that was previously in partnership with Italian football giants AS Roma.

Hunt has had a phenomenal 2019 earning just under $200,000 in prize money. At just 18, Hunt is a role model for other young FIFA players in the burgeoning world of esports. Hunt ended last season atop the Xbox Global Rankings with 13,265 points.

The entire FIFA 20 Global Series prize purse will see over $3 million doled out to esports athletes. The FIFA 20 season will end at the FIFA eWorld Cup in July 2020.
