Having kicked around for the last 6 years or so as a free-to-player over on Steam, Order of Battle: World War II has come to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Whilst this move hasn’t allowed for the free love to be sent the way of Xbox players, if you’re in the market for the most complete World War II strategy game ever created, this should scratch the itch. But it’s gonna cost ya.

Available to purchase and download right now, Order of Battle: World War II joins the Xbox fight, giving players access to a super deep turn-based strategy affair. In it you’ll do what you would expect – attempt to lead your troops to victory, moving delicately from one battle to the next, trying to limit your losses as you go.

Order of Battle: World War II does however allow for multiple options and with a unit roster that is more than 1000 deep, picking and choosing your fights, and those who should be involved in them, is critical to success. When you then include the variety of scenarios in play too, taking you all across the globe as the WWII fight intensifies, things must certainly get interesting.

The whole thing is played out with what the teams behind it – The Aristocrats and Slitherine – would like to call a rich 3D world, one that is full of ‘what-if’ moments. We’ll find out if that is actually the case once our full review of Order of Battle: World War II on Xbox goes live. Keep an eye out.

Further key features include the likes of…

  • Classic turn based, hex based gameplay with an intuitive UI and great depth
  • Play in dynamic campaigns with unit carryover and multiple “what-if” scenarios
  • A rich 3D world with detailed animations and effects. Turn-based wargaming has never looked this good!
  • Many different Specializations give a unique feel to each faction including Banzai Charge, Bushido Code and even the Manhattan Project
  • Over 1400 different unit types, including infantry, tanks, ships and aircraft, each with unique visuals and animations
  • Attach unique commanders to your units to give them additional offensive and defensive bonuses
  • A deep but intuitive supply system allowing breakthroughs & encirclements

If you’re a fan of the free-to-play Steam version and reckon you just can’t miss getting involved in Order of Battle on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, you’ll find a download available from the Xbox Store for £16.74. But from there things could well get a little expensive…

There are Day One DLC packs galore too, so if you do find yourself loving what has been created, consider a purchase of any of the following missions too. Yes it may well get a little silly in terms of pricing if you wish to take home everything included here – you’re looking at near £200 in cash terms – but as they say, the choice is yours…

  • Winter war – £12.49
  • Red Steel – £12.49
  • Rising Sun – £16.74
  • Allies Defiant – £12.49
  • Endsieg – £12.49

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
