The autumn months are both a blessing and a curse for gamers: huge releases are coming thick and fast, mixed with some interesting indie titles. But all this puts an immense strain on our wallets! Disregarding the money for one second though, here are 6 Xbox One games that we are most looking forward to in September 2018.

1. FIFA 19

It’s that time of year when many sports see their video-game equivalents receive brand spanking new titles with enough bells and whistles included to see them become the ultimate sporting experience. But what does FIFA 19 have to offer in order to beat its PES brother? Well – quite a few new features have arrived and they have many fans excited…

In terms of gameplay changes looking to make your football more realistic, Active Touch and Timed Finishing are the main features EA have been bragging about. The former is designed to make control and touches of the ball more realistic, ensuring attacking play is more fluent and opening up further opportunity for creativity. The latter gives gamers a new way to refine their shooting and increase the chance for shots to go in, based on a timing system.

Off the pitch and Dynamic Tactics ensures that you can have absolute control over how you want your players to set up in different situations. Setting up an ‘ultra attacking’ tactic, and then switching to it in a game, could see your wing-backs overrun the midfield and make attacking runs, for example. If you wish to use it, then Dynamic Tactics could make or break every single game.

As with each installment into the FIFA franchise, new FUT cards, Icons and ways to acquire players have been placed into FIFA Ultimate Team. Features such as Player Pick, Division Rivals and new licensed Champions League and Europa League cards only broaden the chance of gaining new players to form the ‘ultimate team’.

If you wish for extra detail regarding these features, and more coming to FIFA 19, then make sure to head over to our full article on the matter. But if you should know one thing, it is that FIFA 19 could be the most exciting, engaging and addictive FIFA in years.

2. Shadow of the Tomb Raider

The legendary Lara Croft is seeing out the modern trilogy of Tomb Raider titles this month as Shadow of the Tomb Raider releases, and gamers are finally getting the opportunity to see Lara develop into the hardened Tomb Raider we all know and love.

Ol’ Lara has got into some deep water this time round, as she has awoken an ancient Mayan power, no less, and a devastating apocalypse is on the horizon. With evil human threats also at her heels, Lara must use everything she has learnt over the course of the last two games to fight through her darkest hour and come out the other side of the mess in one piece.

In typical Tomb Raider fashion, Shadow of the Tomb Raider will play out in exotic settings with an array of dark tombs to explore, no doubt with a few challenging puzzles thrown in for good measure. Certain deadlier tombs will test players to the maximum, with the most mentally straining of puzzles and dangerous traps within.

As was the case with Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider, a huge emphasis has been placed upon the importance of stealth in order to get the advantage over enemies. This time round, Lara will be using the jungle to her advantage, blending into the fauna to hide from hostiles and then striking when the time is right, using a bow or other weapon to administer the killing blow.

You don’t need me to tell you that Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be one of the biggest releases of the year – who doesn’t want to miss the conclusion of this stellar series?

3. V-Rally 4

V-Rally has amassed a bit of a cult following after it debuted to the audiences all the way back in 1997, but it’s been a good few years since we last were able to get into the seat of a V-Rally car and burn some rubber – now as V-Rally 4 is nearly upon us we can finally get back to one of the most iconic rally racers in gaming.

With over 50 rally and extreme racing vehicles, you’ll be spoilt for choice when deciding what to race with. And the choices don’t get easier – as there will be a variety of events to tackle at launch, including the drifting based Extreme-Khana, steep-gradients of the Hillclimb events and of course the more standard Rally affair. The need to learn these new disciplines will be apparent in V-Rally 4’s Career mode as it is in this mode when you will be trying out each type of event.

As well as having a variety of tracks across the world that can be switched up at any point thanks to the specials generator, you will also have the opportunity to be tested to the maximum as part of the challenging groups of time trials – these should be attempted at your own risk!

But it won’t be exclusively about hardcore racing, and collecting, upgrading and customising new cars (such as the legendary Ford Mustang) is just as important as the action on the tracks. Rally enthusiasts will be pleased as iconic vehicles like the Porsche 911 Safari and Ford Fiesta RS RX are also in the roster to be driven.

Whether you are playing through the solo Career mode, testing yourself with the tricky time trials or facing off against local or online opponents, you can be sure that V-Rally 4 will always be one of the most refined rally racers around.

4. Planet Alpha

Every once in a while a game comes along that simply grips you with its breathtaking visuals – and Planet Alpha, with its surreal alien surroundings in day or night environments, is one such game.

But of course it isn’t just a pretty face as Planet Alpha combines stealth mechanics, some challenging puzzles and good old 2D platforming to tell an atmospheric story of a person stranded on a harsh and hostile alien planet.

In its purest form, during your time with Planet Alpha you will be controlling someone who has awoken on this expansive planet, and must explore your surroundings by engaging in some pretty inventive puzzles. It is through this exploration that you will discover your profound ability to shape the world as you know it, a gift that will most likely be used in order to solve puzzles and progress through the game.

However when you aren’t found taking on puzzles you will be getting your sneak on to ensure you aren’t prey to the vicious array of enemies found across the planet. Think of Planet Alpha as Inside but a bit less dystopian and more sci-fi.

That’s quite a complementary comparison!

5. Destiny 2 – Forsaken

Every major expansion is a big deal for Destiny fans, and Destiny 2 – Forsaken is considered no less.

Set in the Reef, your character and the humourous Cayde-6 are on a mission to restore stability to the area at a time when the most-wanted criminals in the galaxy, namely the Barons and Uldren Sov, are organising a jailbreak. For obvious reasons this is a nightmare for the Reef, so you will have to hunt down the 8 barons across new regions in order to complete your mission.

The main features of the Forsaken expansion include a new raid for you and your team to tackle together, two new areas known as The Dreaming City and The Tangled Shore, as well as new supers, exotics, armour pieces, gear and the new weapon archetype: the Legendary Bow. But of course there is no point to all this gear if there is nothing to use them against, so new missions, adventures and activities are present for you to enjoy and progress through.

Gambit is the new multiplayer mode on the block, putting you and others in a 4v4 competitive PvE environment for you to really test your Destiny skills.

If you are looking for a convincing way back into the world of Destiny 2, or if you are a die-hard fan looking to expand your experience, purchasing the Destiny 2 – Forsaken expansion is the path to take.

6. Fishing Sim World

It’s hard to imagine that the wondrous world of fishing will ever get to the heady heights of football or basketball, and currently their respective video-game titles reflect this. But Fishing Sim World is out to show all of us what we are missing: with a wide array of locations, picturesque surroundings and realistic fish AI, it is gunning to be the best in the fishing market.

For those who are not the most clued up on what a fishing simulator entials, you will be travelling across the globe to seven unique locations, some with over 2000 acres to explore, and controlling one of three distinct boats in order to find the best spot to fish.

But a good fisherman would feel naked without a proper set of equipment, so luckily Fishing Sim World has a wide array of lures, bait and lines, each differently suited to the 18 kinds of fish that can be caught. Furthermore, you will have to keep a constant eye on the weather, as the fish in the water will react to it, water temperature and bait choice. As a result you will have to keep changing your location relative to all this if you want to regularly reel in the largest of fish. And that’s pretty much your main objective – reel in the biggest fish – so reacting to fish movement will prove to be key.

If you fancy pitting your skills against fellow anglers then you can do so in online tournaments that will be hosted in-game. On console, 4-player online multiplayer is also an option if you prefer to fish with friends.

Fishing veteran or completely new to the idea – it’s well worth keeping tabs on Fishing Sim World.
