Clunky Hero clatters onto Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC

With a bucket on your head and a broom in hand, you are the Clunky Hero.

Available to purchase and download right now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC, Clunky Hero is a new platformer, one that is looking to appeal in the most grotesque of ways.

It’s priced at £12.49 from the Xbox Store (expect to pay roughly that elsewhere) and is sold by the Chaosmonger Studio that created it as a story-driven, platformer metroidvania. There’s nothing too fancy there and we’ve played a host of games that attempt to run those lines. The difference with Clunky Hero is that it builds in some RPG elements for good measure, and some hack ‘n’ slash moments. Most of all though – humour.

This delivers a funny storyline, the chance for you to chat away with numerous characters, all whilst solving side quests, puzzles and the like. Whether that humour hits though is up for debate, and similar vibes sit around the action too. As our full review of Clunky Hero on Xbox states, the title of the game was always going to be a tough one to shift. Without spoiling things, it feels a bit slow and cumbersome; a bit clunky.

There are good things about it though. It delivers a huge game area and plenty of content for that asking price. But the combat is simple and the main character is, well, unlikeable.

If you do delve in though, you’ll be treated to a story that focuses on how Rufus (that’s the main guy) goes from living an everyday life to one in which he needs to win his wife back from all evil. He’s only got a bucket as a helmet though, and a broom as a weapon. What on earth could go wrong? Or right?

Playing out through some hand-drawn backgrounds, if you’re up for the task of proving yourself as a Clunky Hero, then crack on by visiting the Xbox Store and picking up a copy of the game on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. You’ll also find this one on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC, as well as on our latest video as we look at some of the games that you may well wish to play this week.

Game Description:

Clunky Hero is a story-driven, platformer metroidvania, with a touch of RPG, Hack’n’Slash and tons of humor. If you’d love a platformer game where you have a funny storyline, can talk with characters, solve side quests, find and buy items, change weapons and wearables, with great hand-drawn-looking backgrounds, presented in a very comical way, then Clunky Hero might be the game of your dreams! STORYLINE In a village far, far away, a dull peasant named Rufus was living an ordinary life. The boss of the house was his wife, Brunilde, a boisterously smart and funny woman that you wouldn’t exactly call “pretty”. Life was nice and happy in the village, until one day, awakened by some magical mistake, the Evil One started to spread his minions around town, performing hideous acts against the people. The worst of which was the kidnapping of Brunilde. She was torn from Rufus’ hands and put in a prison at the Evil One’s castle. Transformed into a blondie duck-faced doll girl, she now spends all her time staring at herself in a small handheld mirror. Determined to win her back, Rufus made a helmet out of a bucket and picked a broom as a weapon. Everybody now calls him the CLUNKY HERO, but he might be the only hope to defeat the evil one that no one wants to call by name.

I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
