It’s obvious that the classics are the best, and it’s probably for that reason alone that Atari have seen fit to Recharge some of their finest efforts from years gone by. The latest of those is the reworkings of Asteroids: Recharged.
Asteroids: Recharged follows on nicely from Centipede: Recharged and Black Widow: Recharged to fill out the triple threat of Atari classics as the iconic brand collaborate with Adamvision Studios and SneakyBox Studios to ensure modern day gamers get the opportunity to enjoy some proper old-school gaming.
It’s priced at £7.99 and available to purchase and download from the digital storefronts of Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
If you do decide a purchase is for you – perhaps as you look to relive memories from yesteryear, or because you found love with the other Recharged classics – Asteroids: Recharged will deliver an experience pretty damn close to the 1979 original. Obviously it’s been reworked to suit a modern day audience and so in and amongst the fresh visual look, the widescreen optimisation and the high refresh rates, will be a pumping soundtrack and two player simultaneous play – through Steam Remote Play or Share Play on PlayStation if you must.
From there, usual Asteroids fare sits and if you know nothing about one of the earliest of videogames, it’s about now that you need to sit up and take note. You see, Asteroids will have you piloting a small spaceship through space, hoping beyond everything else that you don’t go crashing into flying saucers and the multitude of asteroids that frequent the galaxies.
Standard shooting action comes to the fore, and Asteroids: Recharged will happily deal with a plethora of powerups – Mega Lasers, Side Attack Shots, Orbiting Bullets and more are all in place. You’ll also be able to hit hyperspace like never before!
Throw in high score chasing and a variety of Challenge modes and Asteroids: Recharged could well be the best of the Recharged Atari bunch. Stay tuned for a full review from us very soon.
“Asteroids helped revolutionize the arcade scene in the late 70’s with it’s incredible gameplay and novel concept,” said Wade Rosen, CEO, Atari. “With a new, sleek design, powerups, challenges and leaderboard support, Asteroids: Recharged will be a great time for fans of the original and newer gamers looking for a modernized retro fix.”
You’ll find Asteroids: Recharged on the Xbox Store for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. It’s also in PC, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. Let us know if you decide to pick it up.
