Another year, another Tour de France video game from NACON and Cyanide Studios. But this time around will come the opportunity to partake in a multiplayer criterium. If you like your cycling, you’ll know that’s a big deal.
Due to launch on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC come June 6th is the next instalment in the TDF game series, with the snazzily titled Tour de France 2024. It follows on from previous yearly editions – Tour de France 2023, Tour de France 2022, for instance – to provide another take on the virtual cycling scene.
Multiplayer cycling
But this year the teams behind it, NACON and Cyanide, are going big, including a highly anticipated multiplayer mode – Criterium mode. Catering for up to six players, with each controlling two cyclists, you’ll find yourself competing to win a stage. Obviously the first across the line wins, but conditions will vary between races.
To cover bases, the Criterium mode will see you take on a lead rider as well as a team-mate. And there will be four team types to choose from too – flat, hill, mountain or versatile. Choose your poison for the stage ahead.
Further to that, different settings will be chosen randomly at the start to create varied conditions that players will need to adapt to each time. After the stage is chosen (randomly picked from all stages available except for time trials), Tour de France 2024 will then select a distance between 30km and 50km, as well as the type of team that players will need to control.
The game will also change a game setting such as whether a team-mate is in the race or the ability to take a feed. Expect the random nature to create a variety of situations that will need to be understood and evaluated, all as you look to gain the upper hand and be the first to cross the finish line.
