If you can remember back to 2019 then you may well remember the launch of FAR: Lone Sails. It was a stunning game, one that told stories like never before. Today, the companion game arrives – the highly atmospheric and emotive FAR: Changing Tides. And it’s damn good.
Available to purchase and download this very minute on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC is FAR: Changing Tides. It’s priced at £14.99 unless you want to make the most of Xbox Game Pass and play it for free through that service.
In a switch from the desert lands of Lone Sails, FAR: Changing Tides whisks players off to a flooded world as they look to take in the meditative journey which promises to unfold. Created by the development team at Okomotive and picked up by Frontier Foundry, this is a post-apocalyptic adventure which will try to deliver one of the most memorable experiences of recent years.
Pushed along by a dynamic soundtrack, a glorious art style (something which has been the main focus of our stunning press kit) and a ton of verticality due to the opportunity to dive under the waves, if you’re looking for something that works as a partner to Lone Sails, this is it.
The main thrust of the story focuses on you taking control of a lone boy, Toe, as he attempts to captain a ship, navigating through a drowned world. Puzzles await, as does the chance to take in flooded civilizations and the need to work through natural elements.
Okomotive Lead Designer and Co-Founder, Don Schmocker, said, “What started as a university project with FAR: Lone Sails has grown into a studio of 10 people, two games and over six years of wonderful memories made at Okomotive. Our development journey for FAR: Changing Tides has ended but we can’t wait to see how our players experience their journey in this wonderful world.”
Key game features include:
- AN ALL-NEW COMPANION TITLE – Expanding on the desolate setting seen in FAR: Lone Sails, Changing Tides swaps sun scorched, dusty planes for stormy skies and high seas. With new environments, puzzles and ship mechanics, the world of FAR: Changing Tides brings an exciting experience to fans of this beloved series and new players alike with a bigger, deeper challenge.
- A NEW HOME – Overcome the elements as new protagonist, Toe, who awakens to find themselves alone, stranded in a flooded world. What once was home is transformed into an unfamiliar and sometimes hostile environment. You must navigate Toe on an adventure to traverse the ruins of a once great society in search of a new beginning.
- CAPTAIN YOUR SHIP – Experience the thrill of captaining a distinctive seafaring vessel. Together you’ll brave high seas, navigate intense storms, and plumb the perils of a briny deep. Along the way, you’ll need to keep things functioning by unlocking parts, fixing faults and searching the watery depths for precious fuel and salvage. The farther you travel, the more you’ll learn about your ship’s fascinating complexities.
- A MEDITATIVE EXPERIENCE – FAR: Changing Tides’ moments of peril and intrigue are delivered by environmental dangers and puzzles to overcome, but these feed into the solitary, almost meditative approach to gameplay. Captaining your extraordinary ship, raise the mast, hoist and angle the sails, light the furnace and more as you learn to sail the ocean while mourning the loss of your home.
- SOUNDS OF THE OCEAN – A dynamic soundtrack reacts to player and environmental actions, amplifying key moments in the game and heightening the atmosphere, meaning pulse pounding crescendos, serene moments of reflection and everything in between are created by, rather than scripted for, the player.
The launch trailer below these words is well worth taking in, if only as it’s able to fully convey what is expected of a FAR: Changing Tides player. Give it a watch as you wait for your download from the Xbox Store, PlayStation Store, Nintendo eShop, Steam or Epic Store takes place.
We’d fully advise you to give our review of FAR: Changing Tides a read too. We absolutely love the game.
