Tricking and flipping – SkateBIRD lands on Xbox, Game Pass, Switch and PC

Created by a small team of like-minded folk at Glass Bottom Games, SkateBIRD finally nails the landing required for success on Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC, bringing with it some Xbox Game Pass twists for good measure.

Going up against – or maybe not as this is an entirely different animal – to Tony Hawk, Skater XL and even Skate City, SkateBIRD whisks you off to the micro-landscapes of every day life as you get the chance to grind on straws, backflip over staplers and carve the lines that you want across all manner of cardboard boxes.

Putting you into the killer tricked out shoes of a little bird, you’ll be tasked with turning this avian fella into a skating wonder, flipping, tricking and landing the jumps required in order to prove you have what it takes to own the arena. With bird-sized parks all present, and a simple to use control scheme letting you pull off the tricks you are looking for, this is a skateboarding game like no other – mostly as no other skateboard game lets us play through things as a teeny tiny bird.

It’s priced well too, with a £16.74 tag attached to a full, old-school purchase. Of course, if you’re on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S and have a Game Pass sub in hand, making the most of that, playing SkateBIRD through the cloud if you so wish too, is probably the best option. And if you like what you see, it will do you no harm to then consider a purchase.

There’s a chance you’ll keep going back to this one too, as you unlock new clothing pieces – yeah, birds wear clothes! – discover secret mixtapes and make a ton of new friends.

In all, the key features are as follows:

  • Explore lots of bird-sized parks, with simple controls familiar to any pro skating tiny hawk.
  • Find fancy clothing, secret mixtapes of new music, birbs that need your help, and more!
  • And if you bail, you just get back up – because above all else, skate birbs try their best!

The premise alone pretty much sells SkateBIRD, but keep your eyes peeled for our full review of SkateBIRD on Xbox Series X|S real soon. It’ll let you know if this is closer to what Tony delivered with Pro Skater 1 + 2, or that of Skater XL

In the meantime, get over to the Xbox Store to grab a copy of the game on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. You’ll also find it on Nintendo Switch, PC and Amazon Luna.

Game Description:

You’re a lonely lil’ bird, and your Big Friend has hung up their board for good. Their job sucks, and lately, they’re barely ever home to play with you. You’re gonna fix all that with the power of being a chill little skateboarding bird. You may be tiny, but the more you skate, the more friends you’ll make. Birds will come check out your park, help you find more parks, and together you’ll (somehow) fix Big Friend’s life! Above all else, skate birds try their best. And if you bail, you just get back up – because above all else, skate birds try their best!

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
