We are a long way from Halloween, but don’t tell Game Pass that. Two horror-themed games have made their way onto the service. The better known of the two games is 7 Days to Die (Console, Cloud and PC), a first-person zombie open-world game. The lesser known is Research & Destroy (Console, Cloud and PC), which is launching as a day-one release.
7 Days to Die is a bit of an enigma. We gave it a play when it first launched as a Game Preview game, saying “7 Days to Die truly is one of the biggest let downs of 2016. Although there is every possibility improvements may well be made to bring this game up to scratch, it is really surprising that Telltale Publishing are happy to bring this game to console on a full release”. But it has had five years to improve, releasing in a full, non-preview state on Game Pass.
Want to take a gamble on it? What you’d be getting is a mish-mash of first-person shooter, survival horror, tower-defense and role-playing games. That means a flurry of activities as the zombies aim to nibble your larynx: you will be fighting just as much as you are crafting, looting, mining and exploring.
Research and Destroy, meanwhile, is an enigma of a different variety. It’s quite the departure for Spike Chunsoft, who are better known for their visual novels and RPGs like Danganronpa and Steins;Gate. This is a turn-based action game that seems to be splicing Evil Genius and X-Com. You take control of three mad scientists, as you attack on two sides: research new weapons and gadgets and then destroy some supernatural enemies.
There’s a full-blown campaign here, but also local and online co-op, should you want other players to take on one of the three scientists. There is a B-movie vibe to Research and Destroy, which colours us moderately curious. If you’ve got a bit of cash and enjoy the game, there are also some Spike Chunsoft favourite characters available as DLC.
What’s still to come in April, you may ask. The violent Unsouled (Console, PC) unsheaths its saber on 27th April, while the cute Bugsnax (Console, Cloud and PC) has its time in the sun on 28th April.
In terms of leavers, the 30th of April is the swansong of Cricket 19 (Cloud, Console, and PC), Outlast 2 (Cloud, Console, and PC), Secret Neighbor (Cloud, Console, and PC) and Streets of Rage 4 (Cloud, Console, and PC).
