Curved Space reimagines the old-school twin-stick shooter

-

curved space xbox release

Curved Space has been delayed and pushed back more times than we care to remember, but finally Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC players are getting the chance to jump into the warped, physics-defying battlefields that plays host to its action. If you’re looking to blast away some space-spiders, this is the game for you.

Available to purchase and download right now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5 and PC, with the Switch version arriving on July 13th 2021, Curved Space comes about via a Maximum Games and Only By Midnight collaboration to totally disrupt the twin-stick shooting space.

You see, it is this which picks up the classic formula – shoot everything and anything that moves – but then Curved Space mixes in a few new elements. Whilst the far reaches of space are nothing new in terms of location, the curved landscapes which you’ll be fighting across most certainly are and it’s these which bring the uniqueness to what Only By Midnight have created.

Priced at £14.99, Curved Space then deals in all the usual bits and bobs that are twin-sticker lives and dies on – power-ups are plentiful, upgrades come in a range of ideas and multiple game modes will see you fighting across Campaign, Arena, Survival, Endless and Daily Run options. But thanks to the reimagining of how Curved Space plays, it’ll probably be the wall climbing, horizon dropping environmental flipping that manages to define the entire experience.

We’ll find out how things work and get them fully detailed up in our full review of Curved Space on Xbox Series X. Keep an eye out for it.

In summary though, the key features include:

  • Old School Shmup Reimagined: Enjoy the high-energy action of traditional 2D shoot ‘em ups in a warped 3D space. Climb walls, flip over to the other side of your environment, and experience breathtaking vistas.
  • Play Your Style & Top the Leaderboards: Experience your space pilot’s harrowing journey in Campaign, take on new challenges, test your skills, and chase your place on the leaderboards in Daily Runs, Arena, Survival and Endless game modes.
  • Ride the Synthwave: Get in the zone with a high-energy synthwave soundtrack in partnership with FiXT Neon, featuring artists like Scandroid, 3Force, and Fury Weekend.
  • Upgrade & Take Them Down: Collect a plethora of ability and weapon upgrades. Weapons are varied (from lasers to flamethrowers to weed wackers!) and equipped with their own overdrive states!

If you fancy taking a look at something slightly different in terms of twin-stick shooting, prepare yourself for Curved Space on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC. And if you’re not sure, check out the demo first.

Game Description:

Curved Space is an intense arcade-style twin-stick shooter that takes the classic formula and plunges it into the weirdest reaches of space. Battle cosmic space-invading spiders across curved landscapes where bullets hug the terrain while the horizon drops sharply out of sight.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
