What you get from Townscaper depends on what you’re willing to put into it. It’s a city-creation tool with a few surprises up it’s sleeve, but nothing beyond that. It’s gorgeous, simple and adapts to anything you can throw at it. If you find creative games aimless, though, this is perhaps the worst of them.

With more control over the little tin car, Total Arcade Racing might have achieved its purpose: to be a party game of choice for up to eight players. But it’s an unwieldy, slippery beast. You can train yourself to enjoy it, anticipating the turns and conserving your boost, but when you want a game that eight rivals can pick up and enjoy in seconds, it doesn’t fit the bill.Â

The Matrix Awakens - full title, ‘The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience’ - sits somewhere in the Venn diagram of free, playable demo, advert and technical showcase. That might sound off-putting or baffling, but you shouldn’t be deterred: this is a milestone piece of software that you should immediately boot up if you have next gen hardware, specifically a PC, Xbox Series X|S or a PlayStation 5.

When the blood flows and a detective is needed, SHINRAI: Broken Beyond Despair becomes far more accomplished. If you have the stomach for it, there is some great stuff waiting for you at the end of this visual novel. You just have to wade through some disgusting innards to get there.
There’s nothing wrong with a deeply difficult platformer. But they have to be fair, and the controls have to be well-oiled. Alexio isn’t even close to nailing either, and the result is about as unsatisfying as a precision platformer can get. Don’t be tempted by the cute duck on the marketing: this one is less fair and more fowl.Â
If you like your platformers dark, immersive and with a large amount of social commentary, then look no further than White Shadows! Developed by debutant studio Monokel, this will be the jam of anyone who enjoyed Limbo, Little Nightmares and Inside, as well as dystopian nightmares from people like George Orwell or Aldous Huxley.
Coming from the same publisher as Blaze and The Monster Machines: Axle City Racers, which did such a poor, hollow job of bringing karting to younger players, it’s a joy to play something so substantial and well crafted in Fast & Furious: Spy Racers Rise of SH1FT3R.
Could Ever Forward be the first true ‘lockdown’ game? Clearly it was made before lockdown hit, but the tale of a young girl, Maya, forced to stay inside while her mother goes out to tackle a bigger pandemic is hugely (and accidentally) resonant with our own personal lock-ins.Â
If you were ever put through the wringer by Inside or Limbo, and fancy climbing through again, then White Shadows will duly oblige. It’s a magnificent lightshow.
