The Signal is coming to PC and consoles

Have many times have we heard it? The last remaining humans have ditched Earth in search of a new planet; somewhere they can call home. It’s a trope that has done the rounds in gaming forevermore, but honestly, we can’t get enough of it. That looks to be the case in The Signal too, as we explore, invent and survive in an all-new open world survival epic.

How will you cope in The Signal?

In The Signal you play as the leader of an expedition in which humanity is looking for a new home. They rock up on an uncharted planet; one that seems to be a bit sentient. The big question though is how will you survive?

From the Goose Byte team, The Signal is being put together in Unreal Engine 5, readying itself for launch on PC and console. Which consoles? Not a clue, but let us hazard a guess at The Signal on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 at the very minimum, with Xbox One, PS4 and Switch play popping up if we cross our fingers enough.

Playing out as a third person multiplayer open worlder, this survival crafting affair looks to be focusing on player creativity more than anything. It’s that which is part of the three key pillars of The Signal – exploration, invention and survival. There will be a big push in terms of user-generated crafting content too, as The Signal looks to let players make the most of a unique recipe sharing system that should set it apart from all others.

The devs are super excited

“We’re really excited about the world we’re building for The Signal,” says Theodor Diea, CEO and founder of Goose Byte. “We want to take players on a journey: as you step out onto this uncharted planet you are faced immediately with an environment that is as mysterious as it is beautiful. This planet is teeming with unknown flora and fauna across multiple, massive biomes. But not everything is as it seems. The planet is fully aware of your actions and, the longer you spend exploring, the more it starts interacting and messing with you.”

Touching back on the theme of environmental awareness, Theodor asks: “What if we could re-roll the choices we’ve made here on Earth? Are we, as humans, capable of learning from our past mistakes? The choice is left to you and how you decide to play The Signal.”

The key features of The Signal

In The Signal, you will find yourself:

  • Venture onto an alien planet featuring multiple biomes littered with strange structures and a sentient ecosystem that seems to react to your every move.
  • Explore, create, and survive as you choose to tame or coexist with your new home.
  • Scan the rocks, flora, fauna, and alien landmarks as you come to grips with this strange new world.
  • Invent and share infrastructure, vehicles and equipment that help you and your expedition solve challenges and puzzles.
  • Master the art of sustainable stewardship of the Planet and its resources as you play the long game.
  • Play alone or with up to 16 players on player-hosted dedicated servers on this unique expedition through a one-of-a-kind planet.

The Signal is in development for consoles and PC – wishlist on Steam. We’ll keep you looped as to developmental progression in the months ahead. For now, hit the trailer.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
