Before the revolutionary Prince of Persia first released, we had something that was perhaps even more so. In 1984, Jordan Mechner was but a college student, and would release Karateka. Going on to inspire Prince of Persia and countless platformers going forward, Karateka was one of the top-selling games of ‘84. And now, it’s time to understand just how this was achieved, with The Making of Karateka on Xbox.
An Interactive Documentary
Coming to you from Digital Eclipse, The Making of Karateka is an interactive documentary that talks you through how the martial arts action game was developed.
Taking players through chapters of development, that explains in detail how sprites were created, motion was depicted and much more, this is an incredibly intricate guide into game development. Digital Eclipse compares it to walking through a museum, with each exhibit showing off a different element of development.
Of course, The Making of Karateka would not be complete without a playable version of the game. Not one, but four different playable versions of the action-packed title are included here. Present are three versions of the game’s early prototypes, complete with save anywhere, chapter select, rewind and director’s commentary.
In addition, a remastered version of Karateka is playable, featuring achievements and cutting-room-floor content for all to enjoy.
