It’s approaching eighteen months since World War Z expanded with the Aftermath expansion, but now comes an even bigger hit of the undead, as Saber Interactive unleash the massive Horde Mode XL to the world.

A new twist on the classic game mode, Horde Mode XL will see you battling more than 1000 zombies on screen at a time, as the ultimate cooperative zombie shooter gets more, um, ultimate.

Rolling out to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC players today, Horde Mode XL builds on everything World War Z: Aftermath was previously able to deliver, with super special XL waves of the undead; more than 1000 will be coming at you at any one time.

Teaming up with others will probably be your only hope with World War Z: Aftermath’s Horde Mode XL, but it’s not the only thing to look forward to. See, Saber Interactive are also rolling a free update to all formats – Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, PC – dropping new mutators into play for the standard Horde Mode Z. Alongside that comes a revamped weapon progression system and a couple of deadly new weapons – sai knives and a tri-barrel shotgun.

The sai knives are the perfect dual-wielding melee weapons to deal additional damage to special zombies, while the tri-barrel shotgun shreds zombies at close distances and can be upgraded from three barrels to four barrels.

If you’ve already got World War Z: Aftermath to hand, then you should be good to go with the new features. If not, consider hitting up the Xbox Store or PlayStation Store in order to take him the edition of your choosing. World War Z: Aftermath is powered by the Swarm Engine, allowing you and your mates to take on hordes of ravenous zombies, and whilst it’s very much a bit of a marmite affair, we’ve grown to love it more and more with each passing day.

Let us know if you’ll be dropping into World War Z: Aftermath to see what the Horde Mode XL brings. Spoiler alert: It brings zombies. LOTS OF ZOMBIES!

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore. Gamertag is neil363, feel free to add me to your list.
