SOULVARS is on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC

A turn-based, deck-building, action RPG may win the award for the most buzzwords in its genre description (all it needs now is to be a roguelike!), but SOULVARS on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC looks to be a stylish JRPG that many can seriously get behind. Let me explain!

A Cocktail of Systems

SOULVARS – releasing today on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC platforms – is a retro-styled JRPG with core elements of deck-building, with you acquiring a variety of cards (known as Soulbits) for you to deploy in fast-paced turn-based combat. We are immediately reminded of the cult classic that is Slay the Spire, with the addictive gameplay loop of winning battles, receiving new cards, and then using these cards to better synergise your party, present in spades here.

This core loop will play out amidst a story of conspiracy and sadness, as the game tells a cautionary tale of the dangers of advanced technology, and how it can be devastating when in the wrong hands. You’ll play as Yakumo – a Soulbearer commissioned by the Dominator Disposal Organization, to do rid of the evil Dominators that have engineered technology against humanity.

Yakumo and his party must collect Soulbits, and use their unique abilities to destroy the Dominators, especially when it comes to the flashy finishing moves that the Soulbits unlock.

Take a Step Back

Developer ginabo and publisher SHUEISHA GAMES (the gaming division of Japan’s largest manga publisher) describe each battle as an intricate puzzle that must be solved. Using the abilities that you have within your deck, you must weigh up whether to be on the offense or defense, and which enemies to prioritise. The combat itself may be frantic, but you must keep a cool head to order your party suitably.

Key Features

  • Classic JRPG nostalgia with a modern twist – Players immerse themselves in a game that blends the best of two worlds: stylish pixel art animations and dynamic, turn-based tactical planning.
  • Deckbuilding combat system – Collect gear to expand your Soulbits – cards for your hand – and personalize your deck, then mix and match various Soulbits to uncover new attacks and unlock over 100 different Arts and Abilities. Hunt for rare and powerful gear by defeating unique Dominators on your journey to mastering the ultimate Arts!
  • Party-based combat – Each enemy is a puzzle to solve, a challenge to overcome! Customize your party to deal with different enemy types, identify their weaknesses and combine Soulbit actions to unleash over 200 powerful finishing moves!
  • Compelling narrative – Through Yakumo and his fellow Soulbears, uncover the dangers of unchecked technology, the origins of the “DDO” (Dominator Disposal Organization), and the conspiracies behind the emergence of the Dominators.
  • Localized in 12 languages – Both interface and subtitles are available in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Hindi so players worldwide can enjoy this action-packed adventure.

I'm an avid gamer who will play pretty much anything... but stick an open world or adventure game in front of me and I'm more than happy.
