Japanese horror just in time for Halloween? You got it with PROJECT ZERO: MAIDEN OF BLACK WATER.

Straight out of the KOEI TECMO stable, PROJECT ZERO: MAIDEN OF BLACK WATER delivers some spine chilling horror to current and next-gen consoles, as it releases on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC.

It’s a game which takes players off to Mt. Hikami, a sacred location which is haunted by the most bizarre occurrences you could ever imagine. You see, this is a place where the water is thought to be home to vengeful spirits. And honestly, that’s never good.

You take in PROJECT ZERO: MAIDEN OF BLACK WATER through the eyes of Yuri Kozukata, Ren Hojo, and Miu Hinasaki, as they rely on a flashlight and a unique camera – the Camera Obscura – throughout. It’s the camera which is the most interesting of ideas though, as it comes with the ability to take pictures of ghosts. This means that as the gang explore the mountain, they’ll uncover those who have disappeared.

Taking the Wii U version from 2014 and pushing it out with the same name is what KOEI TECMO are doing here, but this one obviously comes with some massive improvements, mostly in terms of the visuals, but also in the way it is able to deliver a terrifying, yet immersive, experience.

With a Photo Mode thrown in, and a selection of costumes and gear for the protagonists to wear, there should be much to enjoy with PROJECT ZERO: MAIDEN OF BLACK WATER.

It comes in two bundles too – the Standard Game for £32.99, or the Digital Deluxe Edition for £44.99. The latter comes with a 20th Anniversary Art book, costume set and more. You can however buy those extra bits for £12.99 at a later date if you prefer to kick off your adventures with the regular base game.

We’re currently working through a review of PROJECT ZERO: MAIDEN OF BLACK WATER and will let you know how it plays out on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. For now though, hit up the Xbox Store through those links above.
You’ll also find the game on PlayStation, Switch and PC.

Game Description:

[The Story] Mt. Hikami was once revered as a spiritual place. It housed a unique religion based on beliefs and customs of worshipping water as a deity and is said to have been a site of many gruesome incidents and mysterious phenomena. This mysterious and intertwined story follows three protagonists—Yuri Kozukata, Miu Hinasaki, and Ren Hojo—as each of them explores the ominous Mt. Hikami, a place where many came to die, and the secrets it hides. [Gameplay] Players use Camera Obscura, a special camera capable of repelling vengeful ghosts and sealing away their powers, to explore Mt. Hikami and the numerous incidents that took place there in the past. The story is divided into separate missions, and each mission is led by a new protagonist. In addition to sealing the evil spirits that attack you, Camera Obscura can be used to reveal other things that can’t be seen with the human eye and will help in the recovery of lost items.
