Terminal Velocity: Boosted Edition brings the 3DRealms classic back to Xbox and PlayStation

If the name of Terminal Velocity: Boosted Edition rings a bell, it’s probably either because a) you really enjoyed the Charlie Sheen movie of the same name, or b) you played the 1995 classic from Terminal Reality and 3DRealms on the PC. Often compared to the equally classic Descent, it was a an arcade-style flight sim where you used the full 3D space to shoot down baddies and rotate through increasingly small doors.

A return of the classic

Well, today sees the return of Terminal Velocity via its Boosted Edition to Xbox and PlayStation, courtesy of Terminal Reality and Ziggurat. What does that ‘Boosted Edition’ entail? Well, the draw distance has been shoved back, there’s less polygon jitter (something that happens to us if we move too fast and then stop), the sound has been re-engineered, and achievements have been added (of course).

But, most of all, you get that delicious taste of nostalgia, straight to your tastebuds. There was a time when games like this and Descent were the future, and we can’t wait to feel ten again as we swing through corridors and take down some drones.

It had quite a lot of content for its time, with nine planets, three levels per planet and – we’re not sure quite how this was measured – 400,000 sq. miles of terrain. Take that, Star Citizen.

The key features of Terminal Velocity: Boosted Edition on Xbox and PlayStation

  • Greatly extended draw distance lets you target enemies from further away while enjoying the sprawling view of the game’s landscape
  • Improved sky rendering code reduces polygon jitter
  • Sound channels are now re-engineered to give you the full 360 effect intended by the original code with output on a modern audio system
  • Achievements/Trophies are being implemented into the game for the first time! These challenges will truly test the mettle of all pilots.
  • Fast-paced flight simulator with combat and a straightforward control layout.
  • Nine (9) unique planets, with three (3) levels per planet, dozens of tunnels, and over 400,000 sq. miles of terrain.
  • Seven (7) destructive weapons, multiple power-ups, and spectacular air-to-air and air-to-ground combat.
  • Enemy ships cast translucent shadows.
  • Bank, roll, loop, and thrust bow-first into battles.

Terminal Velocity: Boosted Edition will no doubt get a review from us soon (probably from us, as we’ve got a hankering for it). For now, head to the Xbox Store and pick up an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S version of the game for £9.99. It’s also on PlayStation, as well as Switch and PC through Steam.
