UnMetal KeyArt

If you’re wanting to merge and mix a bit of 2D espionage action with some hardcore deception, all kicked along with a bit of a retro vibe, UnMetal is going to be for you. Today we can exclusively reveal the launch date for Versus Evil and Unepic_Fran’s upcoming title.

So, let’s not beat around the bush, UnMetal is set to launch on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store and GOG, come September 28th 2021

Created by the indie developer Unepic_Fran, and pushed out to market via the power of Versus Evil, UnMetal is a 2D action stealth affair which has been created with narrative in mind. It’s this which piles on the 80’s movie and TV nostalgia which it combines with UnMetal’s top down 2D pixel-art visuals for a distinctly retro feel.

All well and good you may say, but what exactly are us players getting involved in? Well, UnMetal will task you, the player, to conduct a covert mission to escape a clandestine military base for a crime you didn’t commit. It sees you assuming the role of Jesse Fox, a highly trained special forces soldier inadvertently embroiled in an unplanned mission to prevent an attack on NATO. Shot down, captured and questioned, Fox – and therefore you – needs a way out, mustering up all the cunning and guile possible.

This will see players conduct their subterfuge to escape incarceration by combining and crafting various objects discovered in the game world. These will include toilet paper (old school stuff that is unscented, unpatterned and single ply you’ll be glad to know), circuit boards, rusty wire and even a guards eye patch and glass eye.

Distraction, sabotage and combat will all come to the fore as Fox encounters different adversaries including enemy soldiers, attack dogs, hungry rats and bigger more formidable heavily armed military hardware like tanks. Expect to find the ability to level up with new found skills improving attributes like strength and speed and completing various sub challenges in the game improve the chances of success.

We caught up with Fran in the hope of finding out more in regards UnMetal a few months back, and so if you wish to know more about the game, you would do well to check out that interview.

If all you’re bothered about is the game itself, then hold tight for a full review from us as we get nearer that September 28th release date. We’ll be sure to remind you when that day rolls around, as it’ll be then when you can get involved in UnMetal for yourself on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC through Steam, GOG and the Epic Games Store.

And if you can’t wait, get over to Steam and pick up the demo ahead of time.

Let us know if you’ll be dropping in for some stealthy action.
