Grand Theft Auto VI on Xbox or PlayStation, anyone?

Rockstar Games have today announced that Grand Theft Auto VI (you may have heard of it) is coming to Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Set to drop in 2025, the very first reveal trailer is now with us. You’ll probably want to watch this one.

Grand Theft Auto VI is coming

Details are – quite obviously – pretty thin on the ground, but Grand Theft Auto VI takes players off to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City. From there, the world will be your oyster as you get to take in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet.

“Grand Theft Auto VI continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “We’re thrilled to be able to share this new vision with players everywhere.”

Celebrating its 25th anniversary in December, it’s fair to say that Rockstar Games pioneered the open-world genre of video games with the launch of Grand Theft Auto III in 2001. And from there, they’ve pretty much gone from strength to strength – Grand Theft: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Grand Theft Auto IV. As the years have progressed, the Grand Theft Auto brand has become one of the biggest selling, most critically acclaimed and influential properties in all of modern entertainment.

What we know about Grand Theft Auto VI from the trailer

We left our Gareth Brierley to pore over the Grand Theft Auto VI trailer. Want to know the ten things he picked out?

  1. There is now a confirmed release window which is… 2025. This will no doubt have disappointed a lot of fans who were hoping we would be seeing this in 2024. Alas.
  2. There are two confirmed protagonists and hints at others in the trailer. We have a female and male couple who have a very Bonnie and Clyde like feel to them. The female half is called Lucia and she starts the trailer coming out of jail.
  3. Grand Theft Auto VI is set in Leonida; a fictional version of Florida. So it looks like we have got a ramped-up Vice City location, plus beaches, swampland and surrounding areas.
  4. GTA5 took the emergence of the smartphone and ran with it. In GTA6 it looks like socials will be a huge part of the game with the trailer showing Instagram/Tik Tok screens highlighting events.
  5. First person? In a small section we see the action in first person with what looks like a police raid. This could be some video footage from a body cam or a hint of the return of that mode.
  6. Animals and wildlife are present. The world looks stunning with birds and fauna galore. We did see a little dog running along the beach in one shot, but then, on the flipside, we had a lot of alligators. One coming out of a pool and one walking into a shop. Standard GTA fare?
  7. Parties. Everyone seems to be having a good time. It’s safe to say that there are probably going to be tons of things to do in-game, like the franchise has always done. Here we get a hint of parties, strip clubs, nightclubs, race meetups, and rolling about in mud.
  8. Expect all the vehicles you could ever want. There seems to be a load in the trailer,l from quad bikes, to jets to hoverboats to trucks. I am sure we are going to be seeing more of these as further trailers drop in the future,
  9. Story. Ah yes, the narrative. GTA has always been story heavy, whether it’s been the campaign that you take part in or your own journey through the world. We only get a few lines of dialogue at the beginning and the end. But it hints at an epic drama that I can’t wait to play out.
  10. Rich world building – the Grand Theft Auto VI trailer shows a brilliantly vibrant and fascinating world to spend time in. It looks to expand on all the things we love about the series and take us on another epic adventure that we will spend hours of our time in. I for one can’t wait. Roll on 2025.

The next iteration

And of course, there’s the most recent iteration in the series, Grand Theft Auto V. That in itself has sold over 190 million units to date, with GTA Online tacked on further. And then Rockstar Games also have their blockbuster Western series, Red Dead Redemption – over 81 million units worldwide to date, with its most recent release, Red Dead Redemption 2, breaking new ground in fidelity and immersion.

But it’s Grand Theft Auto IV, or GTA 6 if you will, that will be the focus of pretty much all gamers moving forward. Grab a watch of the reveal trailer below as you check out the Grand Theft Auto VI release date.

And then hold tight for launch of Grand Theft Auto VI on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 in 2025.
