New tactical turn-based fun in Howl on Xbox and PlayStation

Developers Mi’pu’mi’s latest game, Howl has arrived on Xbox and PlayStation today. Ready for some tactical turn-based blood spilling?

Previously released on Switch and PC via Steam, Howl is a turn-based tactical game based in a world where a ‘howling plague’ is spreading throughout the world turning all that hear it into savage beasts.

We’ve enjoyed plague-based games in the past, so what is Howl bringing to the infectious party?

Can you stop the plague?

Players assume the role of a deaf prophetess, who is protected from the acoustic plague. It’s up to you to uncover the mysteries of this dark fantasy realm in an attempt to find a cure. But this will require more than brute force – it demands strategic prowess.

Howl presents players with turn-based puzzles where every decision counts. To stay ahead of the enemy’s actions, you must plan up to six turns in advance. One wrong move can lead you into perilous situations, adding a layer of challenge and consequence to the game.

The game trailer offers a glimpse into this gripping world of acoustic peril.

A visually stunning tale

The folktale environment of Howl is brought to life using Living Ink, a fluid and dynamic watercolour art style. This innovative visual style breathes life into the game, creating an enchanting atmosphere that reacts to your choices.

In fact, it’s that visual style that we have mostly been taken by. You can read why in our full review of Howl on Xbox

Challenging quests

Howl will take players on a journey through sixty levels spread across four chapters. Each level presents a puzzle to solve, villagers to save, and wolves to outsmart. The challenges may get more difficult, but as you play you will be able to unlock and enhance various skills.

Abilities like shadow step, exploding shot, and more become essential tools in the prophetess’s arsenal.

Features of Howl

  • Foretell the actions of your enemies in tactical, turn-based combat.
  • Outsmart the different wolf species, from fast predators to enormous pack leaders.
  • Beautifully illustrated in a unique, living ink art style.
  • Unlock and upgrade new skills like Shadow Step, Exploding Shot, and more.
  • Save villagers from the claws – and howls – of the wolves.
  • Play through 60 levels over 4 chapters.
  • Plot your route on the world map to uncover new skills and secret paths.

If you fancy your chances against a pack of snarling beasts then Howl is unleashed on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S today – you can find it on the Xbox Store for £12.99. You can’t play Howl on Xbox One.

Game Description

Howl is a turn-based tactical folktale set in medieval times. A sinister “howling plague” has ravaged the land, turning all who hear it into feral beasts. You play a deaf heroine plunging into danger in search of a cure.

Plan up to six steps in advance to outmaneuver your opponents: wolfish creatures filled with hunger and rage. Various types of fiends are lurking in the shadows, each of them possessing different abilities and their own levels of vitality. So, you need to consider carefully the strategy that will bring them to their knees.
