Having released on Steam just a mere 6 months ago, Rogue Explorer now offers up some abyss exploration for the console market, with eastasiasoft having opened up opportunities to Xbox, PlayStation and Switch gamers.

Created by Zoo Corporation and published on console through the eastasiasoft name, Rogue Explorer attempts to make inroads on the console scene by releasing on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4 and Nintendo Switch, bringing with it side-scrolling pixel art, roguelike tendencies and a whole ton of loot and treasure.

It’s price sits at £6.69 (at least from the Xbox Store, you may find it slightly different on other stores) and will see players attempt to journey through the Abyss Tower, with each of the dungeons found within just a little more dangerous than the last. Thankfully Rogue Explorer certainly looks to give you the tools you need for such a job, letting you take the loot you gather up and the chests that you open, before turning the riches into new weaponry, upgrades and skill enhancements.

Running a Metroidvania vibe, and utilising roguelike tactics, Rogue Explorer will either see you succeed, or die trying, taking any gear you may have to hand upon death with you into the next run. Rinse and repeat numerous times and well, that Tower is rich for reaping. That gear should see you well equipped for the monstrous bosses and enemies that come your way too.

Key game features include:

  • Explore more than 10 dungeon types, each with different levels of challenge!
  • Customize your character’s appearance, from hairstyle and color to the gear they use.
  • Navigate side-scrolling stages with dynamic leaps, rolls and wall jumps!
  • Gather loot to craft or upgrade your weapons and armor.
  • Choose between alternate skills and buffs as you level up.
  • Take down gigantic bosses guarding the deepest reaches of the Abyss Tower!

Our full review of Rogue Explorer on Xbox Series X|S will be with you in the days ahead. If you wish to grab a copy of the game for yourself prior to – or after – those thoughts go live, get yourself over to the Xbox Store, the PlayStation or the Nintendo eShop.

Game Description:

Side-scrolling pixel art action combines with roguelike challenge for a customizable adventure into the Abyss Tower! Journey deep into the abyss as a daring adventurer of your own design! Start in a humble hub town and venture into dungeons with varied biomes, each more dangerous than the last. Decide your character’s look, alter colors, craft weapons and armor from the loot you gather, upgrade your equipment and choose from a wide range of skill enhancements. Rogue Explorer retains the challenge of classic roguelikes without the harsh restrictions or futile frustrations. Every “metroidvania” style dungeon in Rogue Explorer features multiple layers – upper levels do not change for a day, shifting in their layout only after the in-game day/night cycle has progressed, while deeper journeys take you into more dangerous dungeons that unpredictably change every time you enter them. But don’t worry too much! Even if you fail a quest, your dear character will survive and retain their gear, losing only the stat boosts and special skills unlocked on the last journey into the Abyss Tower. Leave no corner unsearched as you jump, roll and leap off walls! Open chests to acquire swords, spears and staffs that can be set as primary or secondary weapons. Combine and synthesize more powerful items. Stack the deck in your favor before facing the monstrous bosses of each dungeon, from giant skeletons and minotaurs to dragons and even greater terrors!

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
