When it comes to shooters, there are a couple of really big hitters in the gaming space; notably Call of Duty and Battlefield. But sitting just behind those are a variety of other options, all trying to push a different type of warzone. That is where M2H and Blackmill Games come in, having first dealt with the authentic squad-based WW1 FPS, Verdun, and now seeing them expand on matters with the launch of Tannenberg on Xbox One and PS4.

Available right now on Xbox One and PS4 – along with PC via Steam should you prefer that angle – Tannenberg is the latest shooter to run the authenticity route, putting you into the boots of an infantry soldier working the Eastern Front in WW1. And it promises to do pretty much as it says on the tin too, delivering the most authentic WW1 experience to consoles yet; expect details weaponry, uniforms and battlefields which will get you closer to the action than ever before.

Priced at £16.74, Tannenberg is the exact opposite to the Western Front combat found in its predecessor, Verdun, seeing players participate in large scale battles on the borders of Russia. It was here where the Germans faced off against the Entente led by Russia in the East, allowing gamers across Xbox One and PS4 the chance to immerse themselves in one of the most vital parts of WW1.

So what can you expect to find? Well, M2H and BlackMill Games promise to deliver battles that are 40 players strong, whereby the overall goal is to capture key sectors and take down enemy victory points. You’ll be able to choose your favoured squad, take into battle your preferred loadout and fight against all foes in order to control the battlefield.

And as mentioned, every single unit in Tannenberg will come with a huge degree of authenticity, kitted out in the gear and with the weapons and uniforms that were true of the times. In the hope of dragging console players onto the battlefield, Tannenberg has been moved from PC to console with controls, visuals and performance that are all optimized for console. You’ll also be seeing those 40 player battles frequented by up to 20 bots if the need calls for it, whilst further enhancements are expected for Xbox One X and PS4 Pro.

But that’s not all and the introduction of Tannenberg on Xbox One and PS4 also allows for the development teams to drop a whole new map too. The Austro-Hungarian fortress of PrzemyÅ›l awaits all, including PC players who will see the new map arrive in their game too.

Features include:

  • Authentic WW1 atmosphere: Accuracy in everything from maps and weaponry to uniforms
  • Tactical squad-based FPS: Play as Russian, Roumanian, Austro-Hungarian, German and Bulgarian troops
  • Expansive Eastern Front: Large maps each with weather variants from snow to summer sun
  • 40 player Maneuver game mode: Capture strategic sectors in grand battles of movement
  • Never fight alone: Squad gameplay and AI bots for Maneuver so you can join epic battles at any time

If you wish to give Tannenberg a shot on console then you’ll discover the Xbox Store and PlayStation Store providing the options. You’ll also discover Tannenberg and Verdun bundled together in one with the WW1 Game Series Bundle – that’ll cost you £29.24, giving a couple of quid saving. Give them a little visit if you wish to see how authentic WW1 battles should play out. Keep an eye out for our full review of Tannenberg on Xbox One too – it’ll be with you in the coming days.

Game Description:

Tannenberg brings the massive battles of the Eastern Front in WW1 to life with 40 players fighting for control of key sectors of the battlefield, each one offering a distinct strategic advantage. Warfare between the Russian Empire, Germany, and their allies offers a fresh experience for first person shooter players and history aficionados alike. There are seven squads, 50+ weapons, nine large maps that give players tactical freedom, and a 40 player game mode with full AI bot support so you can experience epic battles at any time! Everything has been recreated with the same attention to detail seen in Verdun, the first entry in the WW1 Game Series. This historical game takes place across the lakes, forests, mountains and snowy plains of the Eastern Front – it was inspired by the Battle of Tannenberg in 1914, one of the most iconic encirclement battles in history. Players will be able to master a range of authentically modelled equipment brought to the field by Russian Frontovik and Cossack squads, Latvian Riflemen, the Roumanians, or join the Central Powers to serve in an Austro-Hungarian K.u.K. squad, German Infanterie, or the Bulgarians. Tannenberg offers several game modes – including the exciting Maneuver game mode reflecting the nature of war on the Eastern Front, as 40 players battle across large maps where the objectives and battle lines are always shifting. Survive the deadly battles by working together with your four man squad and utilizing your distinctive skills. There is a wealth of historical detail including realistic WW1 weaponry, authentic uniforms, horrendous gore, and maps based on real battlefields. It’s all-out war on the Eastern Front! From artillery barrages and poison gas to the deadly heavy machine gun and hard-hitting rifle, there are many weapons to master. The battlefield is a dangerous place, and a little thought will help you stay alive – lead your shots, keep your eyes open, and be ready to engage in ferocious close combat at any moment. Tannenberg’s Maneuver game mode captures the essence of warfare on the Eastern Front, with 40 players, large open maps, and the freedom to choose which sectors you will attack and defend. Just make sure you don’t get outflanked and encircled before you can do the same to your enemies! The WW1 Game Series currently includes Tannenberg and Verdun (set on the Western Front). These authentic WW1 shooters let players choose from a range of squads from across the war, as they fight for control of the ever-changing frontlines. We recreate the atmosphere of the Eastern Front with the same level of accuracy as seen in Verdun. Extensive research has been conducted, with uniforms recreated to the tiniest detail and weapons modelled to exact references. The maps use realistic props and terrain layouts based on locations from the hilly forests of Galicia to a Polish village subjected to scorched earth tactics.
