It was meant to be such a routine job. You were going to arrive at the research station by helicopter, get your work done, and then leave on the next chopper out of there. But things began to go wrong from the first moments, and it’s escalated since.
No one met you at the research station, and the place was locked up. The helicopter left before you could flag it down, and now you’re alone in the forests and swamps, knowing that the next helicopter is days away from arriving. Worse still, you seem to have wandered into a horror movie, as an ancient evil has awoken and is stalking you for its first meal. Sucks to be you.
This is the premise for a particularly dark and macabre survival horror/narrative adventure that could well have come out around Halloween. It has no festive cheer at all, and looks to be a ghastly antidote to Last Christmas being played 24/7 on the radio.
All that you can do is explore the bayou in the hope of finding weapons, tools and information that can help you survive the supernatural threats. This is a PEGI 16, so you can probably guess that things won’t be all sunshine and rainbows. One of the screenshots has you shoving your hands into a mysterious and gooey egg sac, so it’s going there.
Rooten is developed by Amortiz Games and published by Samustai Ltd, who have a habit of bringing us games like Puss!, Titan Chaser and Protocol that make us jump up from our chairs, screaming what-the-hell-just-happened?, so we have faith that Rooten will do much the same. Expect a review as soon as we emerge from the back of the sofa.
When you arrived at the research station, no one met you. The helicopter that brought you here won’t return for at least several days. You’re trapped here alone, with no contact to the outside world. And there is only IT for many kilometers around. The Forest. There is not a single living soul around, but something else hides in the darkness. A strange, inhuman creature lurks among the roots of the trees. It knows you’re here. And for the first time in a long, long time, it has decided to come out.
