As celebrations kicked off for the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII, a host of announcements were made concerning console, PC and even mobile gamers. One that will be of biggest concern to Xbox gamers is the news that previously PSP exclusive Crisis Core is coming to Xbox. And sooner than we think too.
But let’s get the bad news out of the way first. Many Xbox gamers tuned in to the presentation expecting a release date for Final Fantasy VII Remake on Xbox consoles. Sadly, this didn’t happen, receiving only a Steam release date instead. Will we ever see this critically acclaimed title on Xbox? At this point, I really don’t know anymore. Even the newly announced sequel – Final Fantasy VII Rebirth – is currently only slated for release on PlayStation 5. It feels like if it was to be announced, it would have been last night.
But the Xbox hasn’t been left completely bereft of Final Fantasy games. We have recently had Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin and are now getting the remastered version of Crisis Core. Titled Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion, this is a remaster of the Final Fantasy VII prequel that previously was only available on the PSP handheld when it released in 2007.
Crisis Core tells the story of Zack Fair, a man who plays a crucial part in Final Fantasy VII without actually being a playable character. Minor spoilers incoming, but he is the guy who Aerith dated before she met Cloud. This remaster will allow many gamers to finally flesh out the lore of Final Fantasy VII and fully understand his role in the lives of Cloud, Sephirother, Tifa and more.
The remaster will feature improved visuals and models, full voiceovers and new musical arrangements. We don’t have a concrete release date, but we are told it will launch this Winter for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PS5 and PS4.
Excited for this one? It might not be the Final Fantasy VII game we were hoping for, but as someone who has never been able to play this one, I am looking forward to it. Hopefully we can then get a Dirge of Cerberus remaster and play as best boy Vincent Valentine. Let us know in the comments what your thoughts are of this one and keep pestering Square Enix over on their Twitter to get the remake released on Xbox.
