Xbox One isn’t exactly overrun with Pokemon games or substitutes – thanks for that, Nintendo – so we’re going to grab at any that come our way. Nexomon: Extinction, after all, could be a mainline Pokemon game, if you squint a bit and turn your head.
Nexomon is out today on Xbox One, a month after a launch on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PC via Steam. We won’t take offence that we’re last in the queue: honestly, it’s fine. Really.
The launch gives us all the chance to figure out whether it outperforms its influences. It’s certainly got a lot of impressive bullet points on the back of its box: 381 monsters to collect, 20+ hours of story and a vast open world. From cursory checks of the trailer, it looks like it harks back to the Game Boy Advance era of Pokemons (Pokemen?), where the vibrancy was amped up and the Pokédex was starting to get more crowded.
Reviews on other systems are cautiously optimistic, calling out its challenge, value and attempts at doing something new, so we’re eager to grab a bag of Poundland megaballs and start catching them all. Expect an impending review from us that attempts to weigh up whether it’s the pikachu of the bunch, or a complete snorlax.
