For those of you who have always dreamt of creating your own friendships, love interests, families, whole neighbourhoods even – now is your time to shine, as The Sims 4 is free to play!

Whether you are playing on Xbox, PlayStation or PC, the base game of The Sims 4 – the latest instalment in EA’s gargantuan life sim – is free to download forever, or at least until EA take such a privilege away. For those wondering why millions have found it so entertaining to play god over a cutesy group of people, all going about their day and having a damn good time doing it, we don’t blame the initial scepticism. However, and many will attest to this, The Sims 4 can truly become one of the most addictive titles out there, as you worry over every meticulous detail to ensure your Sims live life to the max.

Home is where the heart is: before you send your Sims to work, to the bar in the evening to potentially find the love of your life, or indeed you get down to ‘Woo-Hooing’ if that’s really your thing, you’ll need to make use of the near-endless decoration and furniture options that you have at your disposal to build your dream house. Well, that’s the goal anyways – for most of us, we’ll be starting out with a one-bedder, a pathetically tiny TV and an equally small sofa to plump our Sims down on. Baby steps, people, baby steps.

And what do you know? The sun is coming up and you’ve managed to spend a whole eight hours on what roof tiles you think look best. The Sims 4 really is the ultimate time-sink, as you can put mere minutes into perfecting your Sim’s hobbies, or hours as you build friendships with other Sims around you.

If that’s not enough, then why not treat yourself to one of the many Sims 4 packs or Kits that EA put out for the paying customer. Now the game is free to play, the development team are keen to put out even more downloadable content for the most veteran of Simmers to enjoy.

If you already bought a copy of The Sims 4 by October 17th, one of those kits is coming your way for free – the Desert Luxe Kit, which decks your house out with warming colours.

For those of us on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4 and PC, The Sims 4 is free to pick up and play today. Xbox fan? Look no further than the Xbox Store – but make sure to check out our full review of the game first!

I'm an avid gamer who will play pretty much anything... but stick an open world or adventure game in front of me and I'm more than happy.
