2026's Best Games

Think FMV and you’ll probably think Wales Interactive. But there’s a decent chance that D’Avekki Studios will pop up shortly after, mostly thanks to their back catalogue of games. Today they look to add to that with the supernatural whodunit madness of Murderous Muses.

D’Avekki Studios have previously been behind The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker, The Shapeshifting Detective and Dark Nights with Poe and Munro. They are games that we’ve very much enjoyed, with some brilliant scripting, superb acting and great FMV sequences.

Murderous Muses looks to continue that trend, as D’Avekki mix FMV with a procedurally generated world, as players take in a story that is pretty much infinitely replayable. It focuses on one victim but six suspects, as you take on the role of a gallery security guard, looking to uncover the secrets of a death from one year before. The only way of discovering the truth is to spend time with the portraits that have been inspired by the deceased’s life, restoring the past in order to hunt down the present killer.

It’s the FMV that we have most love for, and that found in Murderous Muses looks to be right up there with some of the best in the genre. But the combination of that with other gameplay elements is intriguing, with our upcoming full review of Murderous Muses on Xbox Series X|S getting ready to spill the beans on how it all plays. Of course, we’ll be spoiler-free in terms of story and secrets.

You’d do well to keep an eye out for that in the coming days but if you’re finding Murderous Muses as enticing as we think it could be, you should perhaps just shoot straight over to the Xbox Store, splash the cash required (you’re looking at ÂŁ11.99) and take home the download that lets you in. You’ll find it playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, whilst PlayStation and PC players will find their stores just as willing to allow access. It’ll be hitting Nintendo Switch at some point too.

Let us know in the comments if you decide to give it a go.

Game Description:

It’s been a year since controversial artist Mordechai Grey was murdered. Now, a new exhibition is opening on the anniversary of his death, featuring six of his most famous portraits – each one a potential suspect in his murder. You play as a security guard, exploring the gallery in the echoing hours to uncover clues about the crime. Solve puzzles and use the Eyes of Mordechai to bring the portraits to life, restoring the past to find his killer… From the creators of The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker, The Shapeshifting Detective and Dark Nights with Poe and Munro, Murderous Muses is an infinitely replayable supernatural whodunit where choosing how to investigate is an art form…

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
