Blending the genres
However you play, Mystic Gate is a roguelike action shoot ’em up with twin-stick mechanics, bullet-hell moments and some screen-filling bosses. Oh yeah, and there’s a ton of loot to gather up, as you play as either a lone adventurer, or with others via local cooperative play.
We’re not sure which bit of Mystic Gate we’re mostly sold on. We’ve take in tons of shoot ’em ups over the years, and love some twin-stick shooting. But then we’re also down with the other elements too, hoping it all combines into one delicious piece of gaming goodness.
The story is pretty hot too. Mystic Gate places us in the shoes of a wanderer, accompanied by a little robotic companion. It’s up to them – and therefore you – to travel beyond an otherworldly gate; a place that grants the ultimate of wishes.
What this means is that in order to find success, we’ll be left to dodge, shoot and roll our way through screens of enemies. Procedurally generated dungeons will add to the confusion – or will ensure that this one is totally unique every time. It all depends on your liking to ‘procedural generation’.
