We love a good twin-stick shooter, but the market is already pretty full of them. Aniquilation however comes to PC and consoles to try and mix things up a bit – and it’s got enough about it to ensure it’s one that you’ll want to play.

From the R-Next and Gamera Games teams, Aniquilation may look like your everyday twin-stick shooter, but this one brings some new ideas to the genre, giving you the chance to terraform planets and use the environment against your foes.

Priced at $14.99 / €12,99 from the Xbox Store and available today – and you should expect to pay a similar price elsewhere – Aniquilation releases on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC in an attempt to inject some variety into the genre.

It takes place on a series of small planets as you follow the life and times of a pilot and their leader who have seemingly got lost whilst out wandering in the black abyss of space. Rocking up in a new galaxy, it’s new energy sources that come to the fore – and it’s here where Aniquilation begins to play out.

Thirty levels are in place and each comes with a new take on the last, ensuring uniqueness is front and centre of what Aniquilation can provide. That’s complemented by the fact that you won’t just be shooting and running your way through these environments, but amending them as you go, terraforming the lands. Do so and progress will be made, along with the chance to upgrade your ship and skills, your abilities and more.

Consider that this can be played alone, or with friends locally, and any twin-stick shooting fan should be left intrigued. More so when you discover PvP battles are available as well.

The key features of Aniquilation include:

  • Enjoy a hectic twin stick shooter for more than 30 levels
  • Use the environment in creative ways to destroy your enemies: throw or reflect elements on the surface to clear the surface of any threat
  • Play solo or with friends in five game modes: story, defend the base (protect your bases and destroy your enemy’s), goal (score more goals than your opponent), contagion (the player that spends less time infected wins) and free for all (finish your rival and its buildings)
  • Choose between different ships, each with its unique set of abilities and skills. Unlock and upgrade new ships as you move forward

You’ll find Aniquilation on the Xbox Store for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. It’s also on PlayStation, on Nintendo Switch and on PC.

Keep an eye out for our review.

Game Description:

Aniquilation is a Twin Stick shooter set in small planets (some of which can be terraformed as you play!) in which not only your shoots, but also the enemies and planet environment are your weapon thanks to your SWORD which you can use to throw or reflect almost ALL the elements in the environment! You will follow the adventures of a pilot and her leader who are wandering in space and are trying to return to their home Galaxy and got lost after trying to solve a mystery that arrived to their galaxy. As you progress you’ll discover that it wasn’t just a coincidence that the heroes arrived to this specific mysterious galaxy and will understand why the only solution is invoking the fabled “Aniquilation” upon the galaxy! Find and learn about new energy sources for your people while you travel between each one of the game planets levels via racing-like tubular levels! Play with your friends! either in competitive VS or coop modes (split-screen)

I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
