Can video games lower your IQ?

While gaming in general has become much more socially acceptable, video games are still getting their fair share of critique. People who go on sites like APNET to find themselves a good online casino might turn around and point a finger at their kids playing Angry Birds. Even though the average video gamer is well past his 18th birthday, we tend to think of these games as something only children are busy with. But will video games really make a child stupid or is this just a stubborn myth that society can’t seem to get rid of?

Video games lead to other types of smarts

Playing Xbox and PlayStation games is hardly a new phenomenon, and something interesting to note is that during the last 50 years it seems as if IQs have been increasing in the nations where technology is part of the social fabric. Technology is very much a factor for this, since it has been found that abstract reasoning skills and the speed of processing things are on the rise. This is something that comes from heavy use of computers.

Children who grew up playing video games will most likely become tech savvy adults, and there are plenty of studies that have shown the importance of the relaxation that video games bring us. Why should an hour in an online casino be more accepted than the same time spent on an energizing video game?

A matter of priorities

There is something to the notion that kids who play video games on a regular basis become dumber, but it may not be about intelligence. When a child, or a grownup for that matter, engages in gaming they are neglecting other things such as math, reading and other homework. This may result in doing poorly in school, but let’s remember that it’s not the same as becoming dumb.

If a boy is spending his afternoons on his Xbox he is highly likely to become a slower reader and not so good at writing. This is especially if he is not interested in those skills to begin with. Spending more time on games than on homework and other after school activities might make the grades suffer but not necessarily the brain. However, since school is still all about reading and writing, the child will appear to be behind in studies.

The social aspect

If you already got your degree and you hold a steady job while enjoying video games in your spare time you might think there is nothing to worry about. As far as you are concerned the games are not making you dumber, only happier. Well, there is still the social aspect. Those around you who are not gamers might look at you as somewhat strange for spending so much time with your console. They might also feel hurt when you prefer to play games instead of other more social things. If you care about them, you should consider when and how much you play, just like parents of school children need to regulate their children’s gaming to make sure they are keeping up with their school work.

As for becoming dumb by playing the video games, it is most likely a myth that might be hard to kill off since so many people like to use it in order to get kids and grownups away from the screen to do what they deem to be more important.
