The Halloween glut of games keeps on glutting, with the release of Clea, out now on Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, joining a previous drop on PC via Steam.
You play the role of Clea, locked in your house by your parents and desperately looking for a way out. It’s more sinister than it sounds, as your parents have an unfortunate history of experimenting on monsters and creating lich-like Chaos Servants. These won’t be babysitting you, I’m afraid – they’re after a bite-sized breakfast.
This is a 2D psychological horror game in the vein of Coma, Lone Survivor and Home, and we’ve played enough to know that it has an eye to the Resident Evil games, with keys and crests needed to complete puzzles and progress. It’s nailbitingly tense almost all the way through, so pack the nappies. The press materials say there are no jumpscares, but they’re stinking liars. Expect the review very soon.
There’s a real focus on story, as you unravel what your parents have been up to, what the slender Chaos Servants really are, and what your role is in all this. Memories and journals litter the game, and are impressively voiced by the cast.
There’s plenty to give you the willies this Halloween, but you could do a lot worse than choose Clea for your October entertainment. Just be warned: it’s not one for the squeamish.
