COD MW3 Zombies Guide for Beginners

-

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is well regarded for its plentiful content across three distinct game modes; the standard Multiplayer mode for quick matches in smaller arenas, Warzone for the battle royale experience, and Modern Warfare 3 Zombies for a horde PvE survivor.

Each of the game modes brings something different to the table, and of the three, COD MW3 Zombies mode is one of the most exciting experiences to try. Plus, it’s a little lighter on the heart since you don’t have to worry about sweaty PvP players spawn killing you all the time.

For those who are new to this game, it’s a bit challenging to simply jump into the MW3 Zombies mode.  Because it requires many aspects of the gameplay, mechanics, and strategies. For this reason, we’re simplifying the most crucial aspects you need to know about the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Zombies game mode.

We’ve also included some tips & tricks to get you ready and well-equipped for the Exclusion Zone!

That said, let’s get straight into Modern Warfare 3 Zombies mode 101!

What is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III Zombies Mode?

As a brief overview of the MW3 Zombies mode in COD MW3, the PvE game mode has you exploring and investigating the ‘Exclusion Zone’ in Urzikstan.

The ‘Exclusion Zone’ is putting it lightly, since you’re met with resistance from brainless Modern Warfare 3 zombies, mutated monstrosities, and Terminus Outcomes, a ruthless & savage merc group led by the notorious Viktor Zakhaev.

What this means in terms of gameplay is you’ll be shooting, killing, and utterly devastating any and everything in your path while you’re in the Exclusion Zone. The game is played in an instance basis, so when you start the game you need to prepare and deploy.

You can select which story missions you’d like to play, your loadout and gear, and which unfortunate operator is going into the Exclusion Zone of COD MW3.

With danger lurking in every corner, you have to be particularly careful not only of MW3 zombies but of every adversary you come across. The good news is, there is no PvP in the COD MW3 Zombies game mode so you don’t have to hide or fight any player squads you come across.

But if you happen to get caught up in a horde and die (or any other gruesome death), anything you’ve looted and earned will be dropped and lost.

Important Things to Know About MW3 Zombies Mode

Extraction Style Gameplay

If you’ve tried your hand at the Modern Warfare 3 Zombies mode in past COD Modern Warfare, you should know that MW3’s formula is quite a bit different than usual. In Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, the Zombies mode is an ‘extraction’ style game mode that has you looting and completing missions in 45-minute-long matches.

Instead of just destroying mindless hoards of zombies in a confined space, you can go anywhere you see on the map to either loot or go through story missions. But once the 45-minute limit is up, gas will start surrounding the Extraction Zone.

Stay too long and you’ll suffocate and writhe as you find your end. Make sure to find one of the exfil zones/choppers to get out of there with everything you’ve looted. If you’ve played the Division series games, you’ll be familiar with the concept.

The Story Missions

Among the first things you should do when you’re just getting started in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Zombies is to play through the MW3 zombies mode’s story missions, called ‘Operation Deadbolt’. Play through the first Act’s missions to get better acquainted with the game and mechanics.

Understanding Threat Zones

There are three level zones on the Urzikstan map – Low-threat, Medium-threat, and High-threat levels. Every COD MW3 Zombies match starts you off in the low-threat zone where you can find low-level enemies to grind through and collect gear, cash, and loot.

When you’re just starting off, stay in the low-threat zone and get geared up. Run a few matches to get yourself leveled up enough to take on the strong variants of zombies and mercs in the next two areas.

As you progress through the Modern Warfare 3 Zombies, you’ll start collecting more gear and weapons to bring into the Exclusion Zone on subsequent runs.

Once you’ve got to that point, you’re pretty much ready to take things seriously. So here are some tips & tricks you should be aware of to master the unforgiving experience of Call of Duty Modern Warfare Zombies.

Zombies 101; Tips & Tricks of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Perk Up

Perks are some of the most important game-changing elements in the Modern Warfare 3 Zombies mode and can make or break your runs. Across the Extraction Zone, you’ll find perk machines selling ‘Perk-a-Cola’ cans, get them as a random reward for completing contracts, or as loot.

Perks give you a buff depending on the specific Perk-a-Cola you found. They can increase your max health, make you run faster, make it easier to spot loot and enemies, have weapon damage effects, and much more.

The best part is you’ll get these as a can that you can store in your backpack. So you can use it whenever you need it for the duration of that match, or exfil outta there and pop one in a later run.

Pack-a-Punch

To truly mow through everything in the Extraction Zone, you’ll need to Pack-a-Punch your weapon as you progress through a match. Pack-a-Punch is the MW3 Zombies mode way of upgrading your weapons for the remainder of the match.

Pack-a-Punching a weapon will draw out its potential, by giving you more attachments and increasing damage & other stats. This is one of the most crucial elements of getting through to the High-level Threat Zones of Call of Duty Modern Warfare Zombies.

But there are only 3 Pack-a-Punch machines per level of Threat Zone. You can upgrade to Level 1 in the Low-threat area, Level 2 in Medium-threat areas, and Level 3 in High-threat areas.

You can only use the Pack-a-Punch machine per zone, once, so make sure you’re upgrading a weapon you like and can use. Oh, and don’t bother saving up either since after the match is over, the weapon upgrades and rarity levels are gone.

Grind Through Contracts

Contracts are one of the most important and easiest ways to earn ‘Essence’, the currency you need to use most of the machines in the game. This includes the Pack-a-Punch, Perk Machines, Mystery Box Weapons, etc.

Contracts are essentially side missions that have you protecting and escorting NPCs, destroying nests of spores, collecting bounties, and other types of tasks to earn a reward. You can only have one active contract at a time so complete the task or forgo it for another contract you’d prefer.

That said, we’ve reached the end of our Zombies 101 class and hopefully, you’ve got a better understanding of what the Zombies mode in Modern Warfare 3 is all about. What we’ve mentioned thus far isn’t even the complete scope of the mode, but it’s a good starting point.Eventually, you’ll get familiar and more comfortable with the mode but what we’ve mentioned is important to know when you’re just starting out.
