If there’s an argument against being overly curious, then look no further than The Guise, an action-adventure game from Rasul Mono and publisher Ratalaika Games.

It tells the story of young Ogden, who sneaks into a locked room where he definitely shouldn’t be. In there, he finds a terrifying mask, and rather than back away, he’s clearly been watching some Jim Carrey DVDs, as he whips it on straight away and hopes for a miracle transformation.

Well, he partially gets it, as the mask transforms Ogden into a demonic beast. Not a charismatic demon like Tim Curry in Legend, but a true monster. Humanity starts to ebb away from poor Ogden, and the monstrous tendencies take over. He doesn’t brush his teeth, he doesn’t say please or thank you anymore, that sort of thing.

The mission is to regain your humanity, but that’s going to require some truly monstrous acts. Take the abilities you can unlock, for example: these are gained by defeating bosses and absorbing their power. You can also collect the eyeballs of those you kill, so you can trade them in with the Eye Collector – clearly someone you’d invite over for tea to meet your Mum – in return for upgrades to those abilities.

You will be using the inhuman powers and otherworldly strength of your beast form to survive in a hazardous world where everyone wants to eat, kill or mangle you. This isn’t going to be a particularly happy-go-lucky tale full of rainbows, but it may well contain some sadistic joys if you care to look for them.

Key features include:

  • * Action exploration metroidvania adventure gameplay
  • * Build up monstrous abilities
  • * Unique art style
  • * Dark, macabre fairy tale story

Expect a review for The Guise soon. For now, head to the Xbox Store and pick up an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S version of the game for £5.99 (£4.79 for the launch period). You’ll find The Guise on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch too.

Game Description:

As the story begins, you play as Ogden, an orphan whose curiosity got the better of him. He gave in to temptation and tried on a cursed mask that transformed him into a monster. You will have to get used to his cursed, monstrous body and try not to lose the last remnants of your humanity. The world of The Guise is filled with terrifying locations, including dying villages, dark forests, labyrinthine dungeons, and deadly valleys swarming with demons. Find secrets, hidden passageways, and concealed rooms containing treasures that shed new light on Ogden’s world.
