Are the free Xbox Games With Gold titles for April 2017 any good?

-

If you’re a gamer who has had a controller at their hands for a decent number of years, you will remember the times in which January through to June was a near silent time. It wouldn’t be until the end of the year, nearly heading into the holiday season that you’d expect to see anything remotely interesting arriving for consoles. Recent years has seen all that change with triple-A blockbusters arriving as early as January this year and several more in the months since. But whilst we no longer have to wait until the exciting times brought by E3 for our fix of gaming joy, there is still something we look forward to equally as much; something that has been happening for several years now – Xbox Live’s Games With Gold arrivals. With April almost upon us, let’s take a look at the new games we can soon look to add to our collection and, much more importantly, decide whether indeed they are actually any good.

Kicking of the month is one of my favourite games of the current generation, Ryse: Son of Rome. It seems like forever that I have been telling pretty much anyone who would listen that Ryse: Son of Rome is one of the best titles available on Xbox One, and that it is something that everyone should be playing. More often than not those pleas have gone unheeded. Now it seems my wishes have finally been heard as from April 1st, every gamer with an active Xbox Live Gold subscription will be able to head into the blood-soaked city streets of Rome to take on the adventure of Marius, a Roman soldier on a quest for revenge after his family is brutally murdered by attacking forces. Marius will stop at nothing to save the city he calls home from the barbaric beasts that look to rule the lands.

Ryse: Son of Rome may just be the most under-rated game on the store at present. With fantastic, albeit slightly repetitive,  hand to hand combat, incredible visuals and an engaging story, Ryse is one title that we are happy to welcome to the Games with Gold scheme and with a multiplayer currently barren from players, maybe now we can finally see this once fantastic offering revived once and for all.

Available for the second half of the month is the engaging interactive story of Telltale’s The Walking Dead Season 2. Season 2 of the cult hit follows young Clementine on a new adventure fresh after the pain of Season 1’s finale. Clementine, now in the care of Omid and Christa set of on a path to find a place of safety in order to survive the zombie apocalypse. But in natural Walking Dead fashion, new issues arrive, including returning characters from Season 1, with zombies not the only threat in the wild wastes of America. Of course, any game from the minds of Telltale is certainly worth a look in, and those who have played any of the other Telltale adventures will know that this is not one to miss. With fantastic storytelling, difficult and meaningful choices and the lines between right and wrong blurred once more, The Walking Dead Season 2 is a must play this month.

Onto the offerings for Xbox 360 then and of course Xbox One via backwards compatibility, and first up is Darksiders, the classic hack and slash game that harkens back to the classic action games of yesteryear.

Darksiders sees players take on the role of War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. War is part of a warrior brotherhood of horsemen arisen from The Charred Council, which uses its power to maintain balance between heaven and hell and influence the laws where needed. Whilst there is a freshly remastered version of Darksiders available on the Xbox One in the form of the Darksiders: Warmastered Edition, those that have yet to finish the original on Xbox 360 won’t be disappointed by a return to this month’s arrival and should definitely check out the story of War when it arrives on April 1st. It is free after all.

The final entry for the latest batch of Games With Gold for April 2017 brings a stealth/action adventure to the fold with Assassins Creed: Revelations. Revelations brings many of the series well known faces back with the third and final chapter of the ‘Ezio trilogy’. The plot is set in a fictional history of real word events and follows a centuries old struggle between the Assassins, who fight for peace with free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through control. As Desmond Miles, step into the Animus machine and into the shoes of your ancestors as you relive memories of some of the finest assassins to grace the family tree. Assassins Creed: Revelations is a fantastic addition to the Assassins Creed series and whilst it may not offer much for anyone who’s already visited it back on initial release, those yet to experience the adventure will want to dive in as soon as it arrives on April 15th…especially if you’re a fan of the franchise.

Overall and whilst we may not have some of the most requested titles this month, the arrivals on offer are fantastic nevertheless. Ryse is an absolute gem that should have been given away months ago, The Walking Dead continues a cracking story and the 360 offerings are nothing but solid. They may not offer much to those who visited them before, but anyone yet to experience any of these cracking titles will certainly be in for a blast with some incredible games available.

After 20 years of playing every game I can get my hands on, I can now be found selling my soul for anything Resident Evil, Gears of War, or Gamerscore related... all of which will be mastered after a good cuppa!

The only one I have is Ryse so I’ll be trying the other 3 at some point, it looks to be a very good month on GwG this one.
