Are the free Xbox Games With Gold titles for March 2018 any good?

-

Latest Reviews

The Xbox Games With Gold scheme is a godsend for many gamers. You see, whilst you may be living it up with your multiple game purchases each and every month, there are a huge number of Xbox One and Xbox 360 gamers who rely on the GWG titles for their latest hit.

And it is therefore great to see the scheme deliver such a decent selection of games this coming month, with the Xbox Games With Gold titles for March 2018 pretty much topping anything from the most recent past – at least in regards the Xbox One stakes that is.

But which are the best, and which are the ones that, even being free, are worth giving a miss? Join us as we take a look at the free Xbox One and Xbox 360 games being given away over the next few weeks.

Trials of the Blood Dragon – Xbox One – 1st-31st March 2018 – Immediate Download

What do you mean Trials has a storyline? That’s just bonkers.

Well, yes, but Trials of the Blood Dragon is a bit bonkers. Not in terms of gameplay, for that ensures that your favourite Trials mechanics are still in place – just this time you get a load of weapons, that mad Blood Dragon style, and a damn fine grappling hook.

30 levels, 7 worlds and a story that is set just after the events found in Far Cry Blood Dragon will see you spending more time than you probably wish to as you get to grips with the draw and appeal of another Trials game.

It may not be the usual thing that we have come to know and expect, but, at its heart, Trials of the Blood Dragon is still a Trials game. And that’s a good thing!

SUPERHOT – Xbox One – 16th March – 15th April 2018 – Immediate Download

SUPERHOT tells it like it is. It’s SUPER HOT. In every way possible.

30+ levels and plenty of additional challenges may well point to SUPERHOT being a lengthy affair, but its unique cross between shooting and puzzling can in fact be completed in little over an hour. And that was initially the problem with it. See, for all the brilliant slo-mo mechanics in the world, for all the clever freeze timing gameplay systems that were thrown in to SUPERHOT, £20 for an hour’s work is too much.

But hey, it’s now free so you don’t need to worry about the price.

I’ll say it here and I’ll say it now. SUPERHOT is utterly brilliant. And for free, it’s a game that you’d be crazy to miss out on.

Brave – Xbox 360 – 1st-15th March 2018 – Save your bandwidth

So whilst Xbox One gamers are getting a bit of a treat this month, it has to be said those still solely gaming on Xbox 360 may well be left disappointed. That is no more true than with the first game of the month – that of Brave.

Released way back in 2012, Brave does the usual videogame/film tie-in and fails to ever entice in the gamer. Playing as the star, Merida, and a few other characters from the movie, you’ll find a game that has decided to completely skip big old chunks of the tale it is inspired by, whilst at the same time managing to deliver one hell of a dull experience in the process.

Even with its Kinect features (remember this is Kinect for the 360, so it wasn’t the best), it failed to ignite much enthusiasm.

Brave may be free, but that old gaming and film combo means that you’ll probably be best off completely ignoring this one.

Quantum Conundrum – Xbox 360 – 16th-31st March 2018 – Worth a look

And then we have Quantum Conundrum, another 360 title from way back when – although to be honest, we shouldn’t let age be a telling factor.

Quantum Conundrum is a fun and quirky little game that sees you trying to rescue your madcap uncle from being lost to another dimension. The Beastie Boys have got nowt on this though and with multiple dimensions ready for you to travel through, and a complex mansion playing host to proceedings, if you’re after a puzzler that is a bit different to the norm, then this is it.

Will you still be playing it as April rolls around? That is hugely debatable, but you should at least give it a little look.

The Xbox Games With Gold scheme most certainly gets grief from all corners, but this month is a particularly decent one – provided you are gaming on Xbox One. 360 players will be kept entertained by the second of their games, but it is with Trials of the Blood Dragon, and more specifically the awesome SUPERHOT, that sees this month’s freebies deliver some very special goods.

Now, go and enjoy your gaming! After all, you don’t get much for free.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore. Gamertag is neil363, feel free to add me to your list.
