A new Xbox SHMUP – Broodstar

Whenever we come to a vertically scrolling shoot ’em up, our thoughts roll back to the brilliance of the Sky Force series. Can Broodstar on Xbox go up against that genre champ?

A new SHMUP offering?

Broodstar releases on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S as the latest SHMUP to enter a seriously packed market. This one attempt to fuse some classic arcade style gameplay with heavy roguelike elements. Will it work? We sure hope so because the £7.49 asking price is hugely tempting.

Drop in to Broodstar and you’ll find a game type that nearly all gamers are familiar with. It places you in charge of a little ship, moving upwards, constantly forwards, looking to take down any and all foes it may meet. Standard vertical-scrolling SHMUP fare, yes?

Well yes, but Broodstar lands on Xbox with upgrade modules aplenty, research points to mess around with, and all the hordes you could ever imagine. And why? Well, ultimately it’s all about reaching the BroodStar – the living planet which needs defeating. No pressure like.

Buy Broodstar on Xbox now

Broodstar looks like it could well have something about it and we’re keen to check it out for review. If you agree, you can grab a download of the game from the Xbox Store right now. Surely that cheap little price point sells it?

Broodstar Xbox Description

BroodStar is a classic arcade shoot’em up with heavy roguelike elements. Careful, though… the vastness of space contains many formidable enemies. If you fall along the way, you have to start over — the only thing you’ll bring with you are the upgrade modules you collected in your past runs, in the form of research points that augment your ship. Will they be enough to get you through hordes of unknown creatures and monstrous bosses, and fulfill your quest of defeating the living planet — the BroodStar?

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
