From Naraven Games and their publishers at All in! Games, comes Backfirewall_ a stupidly funny, highly in-depth wander through the inner workings of a smartphone. It’s pretty much unlike anything you will play this year.

Available to purchase and download right now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5 and PC (Nintendo Switch folk will need to hold tight for a release later in the year), Backfirewall_ takes players on a tragicomic adventure through a smartphone, guided by a sassy, self-aware Operating System – OS9.

It’s up to you to follow procedures, before breaking things as to ensure that OS9 doesn’t become old tech, pushed out by a new OS and update. With a ton of comedy at the fore and some really weird and wonderful locations to explore, Backfirewall_ promises much, including the ability to utilise some in-built cheat codes.

“We wanted to create a fun and wholesome narrative-driven adventure game where the social and technological reliances we place on our personal digital devices was the focus,” said Julia Jean, Creative Director at Naraven Games. “Elevated by some great puzzles and voice acting, Backfirewall_ delivers a unique perspective on our recurring relationship to our smartphones.”

We’ve been hands-on with Backfirewall_ for a little while already, so much so that our review of the game on Xbox is up and live. You’d do well to give it a read, if only as it’s likely to tempt you into a purchase of the game pretty much immediately.

Key game features include:

  • Clever physics-based puzzles – Review terminal errors in RAM, party in the Speakers’ exclusive nightclub, navigate through the Wi-Fi bureaucracy, and explore other areas of a smartphone.
  • Cheat-codes to manipulate the environment – Hunt down or create bugs, trim binary trees, master music-controlled platforms, collect errors, and delete data using special cheat-codes.
  • A variety of app-characters – Gossip with quirky pieces of software—the sassy Photos, the insecure Social Media F, or the neglected Health, among others—and uncover their distinct side stories.
  • Numerous collectibles – Collect emails scattered about to discover a parallel story of the mysterious phone User.
  • Unproductive and useless humor – Enjoy meta satirical humor and breaking the fourth wall.

You can grab the download you need from the Xbox Store, with Backfirewall_ kicking around for £11.74, playable on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S (fully optimised). The game is also on PlayStation and PC.

If you don’t want to open the wallet, then you are in luck. We’re giving some codes away. Our giveaway article is also live.

Game Description:

Begin a humorous escapade through various areas of the phone and solve clever puzzles. Meet colorful apps that inhabit the smartphone and have their own opinions about their boss, the update, and the godlike user.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore. Gamertag is neil363, feel free to add me to your list.
