A reimagining of a critically acclaimed mod, The Forgotten City from those at Modern Storyteller will happily whisk you back some 2000 years, allowing the chance to relive the final few days of a cursed Roman city. That opportunity arises now as the game releases on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC.

First confirmed way back in 2019, finally available to purchase and download right now, The Forgotten City takes what had previously received more than 3 million downloads, reimagines it and thrusts the result out onto console and PC, with launch on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Taking the best bits of that previous mod, Modern Storyteller have ripped up and rewritten the script, throwing in more than 80,000 odd words in the process. This will mean you will find more twists, turns, endings and surprises than ever before.

It also provides brand new streets to wander, new characters to chat to, additional puzzles to enjoy, a new orchestral score and voice acting, plus new gameplay mechanics to hold things together. In fact, Modern Storyteller say this is the story that they have always wanted to tell – and that’s great news for gamers.

Of course, with any narrative based adventure, deciding what choices you need to make will be critical to success. But it’s not the only option and combat can be taken in should you prefer. The thing is, the fate of The Forgotten City is in your hands and so every decision you decide on will dictate how things in the city unfold.

Key features include:

  • Explore an open-world ancient Roman city with historically authentic art, architecture, costumes and customs
  • Investigate a gripping, non-linear mystery with multiple endings
  • Become entwined in the lives of richly detailed, deeply interactive characters
  • Grapple with moral dilemmas which have life-and-death consequences
  • Play as whoever you want, by choosing your character’s gender, origin and backstory
  • Solve problems with reason, charm, bribery, intimidation, violence, or by cleverly exploiting the time-loop

It all sounds rather decent and so if you’re interested in what secrets The Forgotten City has to hold, get yourself over to the digital store of your choosing.

We’ll always hype up the brilliance of the Xbox Store and it is there where you’ll find the game on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S for £24.99, but you should also be able to find the keys to The Forgotten City on PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC too.

Game Description:

The Forgotten City is a mystery adventure game of exploration and deduction, and a re-imagining of the critically acclaimed mod that won a national Writers’ Guild award and racked up over 3 million downloads. Combat is an option, but violence will only get you so far. Only by questioning an intertwined community of colourful characters, cleverly exploiting the time loop, and making difficult moral choices can you hope to solve this epic mystery. Here, your decisions matter. The fate of the city is in your hands.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
